Using the Gradient tool

The Gradient tool is used to draw a smooth gradient from one colour to another colour or to transparency.

  1. Select the Gradient tool by clicking on its icon in the tool box or by pressing G.
  2. Choose the gradient type (see below for details) and colour (either Foreground to Background or Foreground to Transparent) in the options palette.
  3. Choose the foreground colour (and possibly the background colour) by using the colour palette or Dropper tool.
  4. Click and drag on the canvas to draw a line that defines the end-points of the gradient. The type of gradient determines how the end-points are used to draw the gradient.

Note: If you are working with multiple layers, first choose the layer on which you want to draw the gradient.

Gradient type

You can draw three different types of gradients.

TypeDescription
LinearThe colour progresses linearly from the start point to the end point
RadialThe colour progresses radially outwards from the start point to the end point
ReflectedThe colour progresses linearly from both ends towards the mid point
