Genesis Plus Gx Help - Won't load Games - Do I need ROMS?

Hey everyone, I am pretty new with the WII homebrew channel. I got the SNES and Nintendo emulator working, but for the life of me can't seems to get any sega games to play. The emulator icon shows up in Homebrew and when i go into it and try to load or choose games it does not appear to be any. When i open my SD card and go in the folder i see no games. There is a file that says "place files here". What files? Do I need ROMS added to emulators. I thought they came when you downloaded the emulator?how do you get games to play? Any help? I am confused. Thanks

Discussion of where and how to acquire roms for various emulators is usually prohibited. But yes, you do need to find the files yourself and put them in that folder. Once they're there, the emulator should see them and let you choose one to load.

Thanks. That is what I thought. I just wanted to make sure that is what needed to be done before I went looking for Roms. I do not need any links for Roms, I understand that it is prohibited. I just wanted to make sure I was on the right track. Thanks again.

Glad it helped. Out of curiosity, which games are you interested in playing? I tend toward the old RPG and adventure games. I tell myself that's because the arcade style games don't run fast enough to play well, but really I'm just too old to play twitchy shooters/brawlers well.

I am just looking to get a mix of lots of old school games. I want to try to get a variety of stuff on there. I am new to this Homebrew Channel and want to see what exactly the WII can actually do. The problem I am coming into now is not being able to get any of the sega games to work. What format must the ROM files be that I place in the folder? When I try to load games with the emulator it shows the games that I transfered onto the card but when it tries to load it I get a black screen with lots of code on it that appears to be some sort of error. Maybe I have just put the wrong sort of file extension game file in it. Not sure. Any ideas?

I'm not sure what formats that Genesis ROMs can take. Taking a quick look at the Genesis Plus GX development page reveals that it supports ROMs in zip files and "interleaved" ROMs. Here's a link to the homepage which has links to a wiki and to an "Official" thread on the subject.

The black screen with code on it sounds like a code dump, which basically means the program crashed. Are you using the latest version of the emulator? (I'm guessing so, since it doesn't appear to have been updated in a long while.) Are you starting the emulator through the Home Brew Channel or did you install it to its own channel? I've found that programs that work well through the HBC can crash when started via other methods.

Other than that, there may be some ROMs that are incompatible with the emulator. If some games work and others don't, the ROMs themselves may be the problem. If nothing works, it's probably a setup issue.
