How many players does the PS3 usually support for games?

How many players does the PS3 usually support for games?
If I wanted to play a game with the family without connecting to the internet, how many players could be supported maximum? Are there PS3 games for 4 players or just 2 players like the PS2?

There are some 4 player games like Buzz for example, i think LBP2 has support for 4 player game modes aswell, not really looked in to it but there are games out there

There are a lot with 4 or 2 depending on the type of game. For instance, wouldn't make sense to have 4 people playing Tekken. But still, companies will sometimes force users to only play online and cannot play local multiplayer, which is soooo retarded! Modern Warfare only lets you have 2 player local multiplayer, right?
