While Halo 3 is as fun as hell, I don't play it as much since my 360 has attained red rings.
However, the most funnest Halo game you will ever play is Halo Custom Edition.

Chalked full of tons of custom maps, vehicles, gametype mods and more.
Halo CE is the most addicting game I have ever played. I highly recommend you halo fans try it.

More info: www.hce.halomaps.org

Incredible game right there.

I've played about every Halo game released since combat evolved on xbox, and probably from the list provided is the original :) I have sooo many memories when Halo 1 was out and people were talking about halo 2 was about around the time when me and all my friends would play online through xbox connect. That and lan parties, plus a great story line made one of the most memorable games I have played in my eyes.

Halo: PC and Halo 2 come in a close second because you could play halo 2 online with xbox live, and it never ever got old (and it didn't even have as much dlc as any game now adays) and Halo: PC because of the mods.

While the graphics have improved, I just have never had as much fun in any of the halo games as I did in the first one.

Unlike most games, the Halo series got better and better. Their "spin offs" (excluding ODST) are horrible. (so far I'm talking about Halo Wars). But seriously, download Custom Edition, you won't regret it.

Custom Edition is the same as PC but free, I've already downloaded it and I mostly played the PC edition for the online play since I had already played campaign several times on the xbox. The only difference I saw was the ability to make your own maps, a lot more easy then on the PC version.

I only really enjoyed the first, it had a much more "classic scifi" feel to it, in both the story and the gameplay also it was there before all the idiots joined the online..... you know who you are

The first one is where it's at for campaign... you know... when they actually HAD to care about the storyline in order to sell copies and get the franchise rolling?... Yeah... THAT'S when the campaign rocked. Once they figured out they didn't need to put much thought into the story they made worse games.

It isn't free, you need to buy Halo PC in order to play it (as in a CD key).
Making your own maps isn't all it can do. This is where the word 'mods' comes in, which is also where the word 'complete domination' comes in as well.
