I have done this many times and still haven't gotten it right, because Windows 7 is already on there expanding it may cause huge problems and you might have to reinstall. Probably the best way is in Ubuntu using that partition manager. Somebody will have probably a better respond but that is all I know.

The only way to expand a partition is if there is free space physically next to that partition on the drive, but it must be at the end of the partition. You won't be able to do this as the starting point of each partition will remain the same, you can only change the end point. If you want to expand the first partition, at least the middle partition has to be deleted. No matter what you do, something's going to get deleted.

Just resize it in the partition manager.
Windows 7 and Vista have a default partition manager.

Not really.
If you found a solution to your problem, it's best to post it so others can learn from it too, making the topic not so useless.

But it was obvious.

Right click the partition you want extended, and if you have extra space to add, then it'll say extend partion. Click it. Set how much you want done.

I'm assuming the free space you extended into was adjacent to the partition you were expanding?

It was probably adjacent space. I believe that's the only way to extend a partition.
