I just tried to put a shine effect on my avatar, not sure if it is mediocre or bad so I decided to ask, which should use, my current one, or this:

On a similar note do you think my sig looks better with scanlines or without?

with scan lines, i say your pic looks better. The text looks slightly more detailed with them on. Good stuff.

what makes it better exactly?

well i prefer windows myself but there are 90% of viruses or something that doesnt harm mac or linux because they are aimed at windows system files thats probley why i dont no anymore bonuses of having a different system apart from windows

nothing that a half decent antivirus and firewall program cant solve... the benefits far outweigh the faults i think,,, and no i dont personally like m$ corporation or bill gates!
