[Tutorial] - Using WinRAR

WinRAR

***Disclaimer***Disclaimer***Disclaimer***

This tutorial was written using WinRAR 3.62
Newer versions of WinRAR are available.

This tutorial was written while using Windows XP sp-1

***Disclaimer***Disclaimer***Disclaimer***

A free version of WinRAR is almost always available here. This will only be a trial
version; however, you will not need to purchase WinRAR to fulfill your basic needs
associated with the PSP.

WinRAR is a great program for the computer that helps to compress files. There are many
programs for the computer that are very similar, and do nearly the same functions as
Winrar does, but Winrar will be more than capable of helping you out with most of your
PSP hacking needs.

I will discuss the basics of WinRAR. Below are two pictures. Figure 1-A and 1-B. I will
refer to either one of these pictures throughout the duration of this tutorial so make
sure to understand which one is which. Figure 1-C is used later on for a certain step.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Figure 1-A

WinRAR will look like this when opened. There are many different tools
that WinRAR offers, but most of them are not needed for one's basic
PSP hacking needs. Below I have added how to use the most important parts
of WinRAR. For more details about one of these labels, you can visit the
section that is in parenthesis.

~ Blue Circle: One of the ways to add more files to your .zip/ .rar. (section IV.)
~ Green Circle: This can be used to extract files where you want them. (section III.)
~ Orange Circle: You can select files to delete from the current file.
~ Magenta Circle(s): Both do the same thing. Clicking this will advance to the next largest directory.
~ #1 : This is where WinRAR will tell you your filename/ format/ and uncompressed size.
~ #2 : This is the filename of one of the files that is in the .zip/ .rar. (section II.)
~ #3 : This shows ALL contents of the .zip/ .rar. file (section II.)

Image

When you are choosing the options for making your own .zip/ .rar file, you
will be directed to this screen. Below, I will tell what these are and
direct you to sections of this tutorial for understanding what they do.

~ #1 : This is where you can decide where on your computer that the file will be saved to.
~ #2 : This is the "Archive name" or "filename" or your .zip/ .rar file.
~ #3 : This is where different "profiles" can be used. (section VI.)
~ #4 and #5 : This is where you choose what format (section II.)
~ #6 : This is where you choose what compression method (section III.)

TABLE OF CONTENTS

I. What is a .zip/ .rar file?
II. How do I make my own .zip/ .rar file?
III. How do I extract files?
IV. How do I use the profiles and compression level?

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I. What is a .zip/ .rar file?

It is possible to compress files to save more storage space on a hard drive
or a memory stick. The most common types of compressed files are either .zip
or .rar files. There are other types of compression as well. The reason for
using a compressed file or creating compressed files can vary, but usually
.zip or .rar compression are used for storing files in one, compressed, place.
Compression is also used quite often when you download something. Compressing
a file before uploading it will bring faster download times to the end-user.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

II. How do I make my own .zip/ .rar file?

Creating a compressed file is simple. The first thing you want to do is make
sure that you have WinRAR installed ;) After WinRAR is installed, you can
right-click on a file and a menu will come up. Choose the "add to archive..."
option in order to MAKE a .zip or .rar file. You can choose what type of
compression (#4 - #5 - Figure 1-B) as well as use a default "profile" (#3 - Figure 1-B).
You can set the compression level at the following options: store, fastest, fast,
normal, good, best. Using a profile (#3 - Figure 1-B) may change any of those
values to fit the profile you choose. You can also add MORE files to an existing
.zip or .rar file. In order to do that, you can either drag the file into the
WinRAR window or you can click in the upper-left corner on the "blue circle"
(Figure 1-A). After doing that, you can navigate to the file you wish to add
and then hit "Ok".

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

III. How do I extract files?

Extracting files is a pretty simple process, but you need to do it right or
else you will extract the files where you don't want them to be. For this
process we are going to be looking at Figure 1-A. The green circle is what
we will be using, the "Extract to" button. Left-click the "Extract to" button
and you will enter another menu. This is where you choose WHERE you want the
files to actually extract to. If you click the "desktop" icon" in the right-hand
drop menu, you can hit the "Ok" button and extract the files right to the desktop.
You can also navigate to other folders that you may want the file(s) to be placed.

Below is Figure 1-C with a brief discription of the main functions
Image

#1 - This is the file "route", where the file will be saved to. It will change automatically if
you select a destination from the selection list (#2) to where you choose. You can
also enter this destination manually.

#2 - This is the "selection list". This is an easy shortcut method you can use to extract files
to a certain directory quickly and easily. You can click on the "+" icons to gain access
to all of the folders/ subdirectories within that directory. Simply clicking desktop will
allow the files to be extracted to the desktop - and so on.

#3 - Depending on what you are doing at the time, you may opt to use a different "update
mode" or "overwrite mode" (located directly underneath #3). These are just ways to
help you organize the files you have extracted. They are self-explanatory so just make
sure to read them through - or leave them at default if you don't know what they do.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

IV. How do I use the profiles and compression level?

Profiles (#3 Figure 1-B) can help you create .zip or .rar files faster/ easier.
This is done by clicking on the "Profiles" button when creating your own
.zip or .rar and then by selecting one of the options. You can:

1. Save current settings to a new profile - if you like your custom
compression settings you've hand-selected.
2. Organize profiles - to add or delete existing profiles
3. Default profile - to select current profile as the default profile
4. Create e-mail attachment - does what it says, but is usually not needed
because most e-mail clients, even free ones, have a built-in service
that will allow you to attach files easily.
5. Backup selected files - does as it says
6. Create 1.44mb volumes - This is used when compressing one or many files
into separate "volumes", or chunks. This is used mainly when creating
a .zip or .rar to be used in a specific format. There is a selection box
that says, "Split to volumes, bytes". By clicking that you will enter
a selection menu of different file/ media formats.
7. ZIP archive (low compression) - the best way to make your file(s) as
small as possible in the .zip format.

Winrar is such an easy program to use and understand. But then again I have been using it for ages, when I first got received winrar it took some time until I knew everything about it.

Yea I know that I struggled with it for a while as well. I knew what .zip and .rar were but I just didn't have a grasp on WinRAR. It took me until now, being a mod and helping people here, to understand that many people don't understand the basics of WinRAR - which is vital for psp homebrew. Too many times have I started teaching people WinRAR.... but now, I can point them here ;)

p.s. - another, more mainstream, tutorial will be up shortly
