Nintendo has confirmed what has been rumored for months, that the DS would be undergoing a facelift. Lighter, smaller, and less ugly the Nintendo DS Lite is a welcome addition to the Nintendo Family. And this topic is supposed to provide a bit of information to those of us who dont just buy Sony products so let's try not to turn it into a PSP vs. DS debate.

Joystiq wrote:Nintendo just emailed us the following announcement of the redesign of the Nintendo DS (dual screen) handheld.

"Nintendo President Satoru Iwata today announced Nintendo DS Lite, a slimmer version of the best-selling Nintendo DS™. Also featuring brighter screens, Nintendo DS Lite will launch in Japan in March. Nintendo DS Lite will be less than two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and more than 20 percent lighter.

Nintendo DS has enjoyed extremely strong sales in Japan and around the world, selling more than 14.4 million units worldwide. The Japanese sell-through of the existing Nintendo DS hardware exceeded 5 million within 13 months, which made Nintendo DS the fastest-selling video game system there.

Nintendo will announce more information about the availability of Nintendo DS Lite in North America and other territories in the future."

Additional details can be found on Nintendo's Japanese site.

Japanese release date: March 2, 2006

Weight: 218g (compare to 275g for the current Nintendo DS)

Dimensions: 133mm x 73.9mm x 21.5mm.

BTW it still retains the GBA slot.

nice find. Judging by the stylus, this system is really freaking small. I have a DS, and really, i hate the design so very much. When this comes out, i will so buy one. :D

meh, brighter screens, I dont realy care that much. But it looks pretty spiffy. I like my ds the way it is right now. I just dont feel like waisting my money on this, but although
I think their thinking of trading in your DS for another DS (just the design) at eb games, maybe they will let me trde in mine for this!
Probably not thougfh but anything oculd happen.

Who cares, as long as it isnt 4mm from the up position on the D-pad. That was the stupidest place to put a power button ever!

I know, I use to own a DS, but then I sold it for $120.00. The thing I didn't like was the power button, when I play, I'm using to my thumbs going up, so I'll always turn the thing off. But what's good is that you have to hold it for like 2 seconds and then it will turn off.

i would think so, but when i just looked, it might not be able to store the stylus, because the stylus lookes bigger than it can fit!

if they took out the GBA slot, that would be cool, casue then the DS will be very freaking smaller than it is now. Homebrew for DS is pretty crumby so i dont need a GBA slot. But the bad thing is, if the DS-lite doesnt have a GBA slot, then i wont be able to use the play-yan micro, which allows the DS to play movies, music, etc.
