so Sony refuses to repair my PSP without proof of purchase although it was a gift. So I'm thinking about fixing the problem myself, and I just wanted to know if any of you guys had a similar problem? my PSP is working fine except that now it wont read UMD's. Can I take the lid off the back and mess with the gears? I hear a crappy whirring sound whenever I put a cartridge in.

Won't read the UMD, did you touch the lens or anything like that with the lens??
-Also, try to blow inside and outside of the UMD, sometimes it gets to the point where the UMD gets really dirty (dusty) that the PSP will not read the UMD...try those.

There should be proof of purchase on the box, unless you got it standalone.

I have never investigated the lens... but if its anything close to a CD player lens..
- try dipping the tip of a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol...
- then squeeze out the alchohol from the cotton tip.. until it is moist but not dripping wet.
- rub gently in circles the lens.
- Then allow some time to dry..
- DO NOT use the dry cotton swab to dry it.. just allow a few minutes.. do not blow.. lots of our saliva is bad for the internals in there.. since our saliva is water.. so things can go rusty in there.

my friend's ps did the same, try taking the battery out and putting it back in (hard boot) and see if it works if not just try one of those ideas ^
