artillery shell

so what is the diffrence between a portal and a shell? and does a shell become the psps new operating system, or do you have to load it like a homebrew?

a portal goes through the web browser like the one in the 2.0+ firmware and only works on those fw, but the shell is loaded like homebrew and does not become the new os hence "shell" but is a very cool little peice of homebrew that give ur psp a computer feel to it and the new arterilly shell does load 2.00+ games such as socom and gta.
