Wipeout Pure
Rating : 7 out of 10
Overview
It's a Wipeout game, but on your PSP.
Graphics
Pure's graphics are stunning and drool inducing. A gorgeous game. The colors, the lighting, the models, everything is just flawless. The whole game just oozes polish. There's not allot to say about it though, I mean we've all seen a Wipeout game before right? It's exactly like that, but prettier. Nothing new, just something classic done real well. The only gripe is the game is lacking that feeling of speed that some games in the genre have managed to convey. You feel like your cruising along at 50 or 60 MPH not 230. It's not a huge gripe, and if you play the "Zone" endurance mode where you keep increasing in speed until you eventually crash, that feeling of slowness wanes. In the standard gameplay mode though, the rule of the day is extreme beauty at merely reasonable speed.
Sound
I am a lover of electronic music so I found Pure's soundtrack to be a great companion to the game. With tracks by a whole slew of acts, the soundtrack really fits right in with the game and keeps up that wonderful Wipeout tradition of great visuals matched with great music. As far as the in game sound effects... it's just a Wipeout game whaddya want? There's some hovering sounds, some engine sounds, some crashing sounds, some hip stylized robo-Japanese voices. No awards for sound design, but nothing cringe inducing either.

Gameplay
I've always loved the Wipeout series and have played many of the games. I like the controls, those loose drifty controls that make corners hard to make, but so satisfying when done with precision, or better yet, style. You have to remember, your racing hovercrafts, and the dynamics are allot different from cars on asphalt. Everything is more fluid, and your own momentum can lead to overshot turns or ramming into walls. Once you get used to it, the controls are great. For a different perspective, my brother in law thinks the controls are too loose, and not responsive enough. So opinions run the gambit on this one. Try before you buy, and if you dig the control it's a wise buy.
Overall
If you enjoy the Wipeout series, or racing games in general I would highly recommend this game. It's also recommend it if you'd like some eye candy to make all your squinty-eyed DS owning buddies green with envy - let them play Urban Asphalt GT on their DS then just show them Pure, then proceed to revel in their oh so sweet tears. Like I said above, if your not familiar with the Wipout series, or if it's been a while, try before you buy to make sure you like the controls. They seem to have a real love-it-or-hate-it air to them. I definitely recommend this game, used or new.
