PSP vs. DS

...And of course im talking about the psp vs the Ds. Lets see which has more to offer

ImageImage
I have both and here is what i think....

PSP DS
Homebrew 5 0 -The psp has much more useful and enjoyable brew
Emulator 1 0 - Because of psp 222-333mhz you can run all major console systems and some OS
Backups 1 4 PSP iso's take up too much space on your mem stick as opposed to DS roms where 2GB can hold up to 40+ roms
Money 0 1 -PSP169$+2GB30+???=229+ DS130$+Passme(R4,M3...)40$+2GBSDmicro30$+???=200+
Games 0 1 -Most games on the psp S**k because they are more focussed on graphics unlike ds games are much more enjoyable
Media 1 0 -Photos, music, movies the psp takes charge
multiplayer 0 1 - DS has a way better multiplayer system.

Try editing your topic and read the rules (cursing etc.)
Im going to have to agree with you on the multiplayer part...I hate the ad-hoc mode on PSP.
But for graphics-wise, I dont think it matters. But I dont like the graphics in DS games, they are just horrible. Unlike the PSP's graphics, its a good thing PSP is more easier to code in because you can import Open-GL, but yeah theres hardly any polygons or vertices (as in high quality ones) than there is on the simple DS.

I think the psp may be slightly better, because it has so many uses. Yea ds has better multiplayer, but I don't think neither has any good games. I just wish any handheld would have some better games. The ds has games similar to the wii. They both have kind've kiddy games but there fun on the wii due to the whole wireless stuff. PSP is slightly better though in my opinion :p

i like the psp better because it is a bit more 'compatable'. you can pretty much do anything to it if you have a computor. but like you guys said, the ad-hoc isnt that great.

If we're talking about the gaming experience, the DS wins hands down. The touch screen alone and the things Nintendo does with it is worth the price of admission, but add in there the mic and the fact that you have two screens and you have a super cool system. It's worth getting for Metroid Prime Hunters and the Castlevania games alone. If you were able to connect the DS to a computer, I think the homebrew capabilities would be much better too.

PSP is a fantastic system because of the homebrew capabilities. if they never released any PSP games, i doubt anyone would be all the upset, and the experience isn't all that innovative, but it is good.

I'm going to put this topic to S-H-A-M-E so that something like this never shows up in this forum again, and if it does, this can be used as reference. I've been hunting down all of the various functions and details of the PSP and the DS, and this is what I've come up with. I'm sure that I am missing 1 or 2 things about the DS, but I KNOW I'm missing 50-100 things about the PSP. I'm doing this intentionally though, in order to keep the psp list "short" and also because there are too many third party programs/ applications to list that have been made for the PSP.

Stock Nintendo DS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. plays games in sub/ entry level 64 bit graphics
2. dual screens. Although there is an obnoxious
space between the screens, this allows one screen
to be a touch screen, so it's ok.
3. built-in microphone
4. pictochat (need to be within talking distance to
use anyways).
5. flip top design helps protect screen(s) better
6. short distance multiplayer
7. online multiplayer (more advanced than PSP)
"Homebrew Enabled" Nintendo DS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. substandard media programs become available
2. DS roms take up less space (b/c they are less
complex)
3. plays Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS roms
4. SLIGHT, and highly disfunctional emulators

============================================

Stock Sony PSP
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. constantly updated firmware: this is good because without it, many features would be left out of this list.
2. plays games in slightly "sub-PS2 genre" graphics
3. video playback
4. image viewer
5. 90% full web browser
6. ability to play flash games
7. ability to download RSS feeds
8. interactivity with ps2/ ps3
9. password protection features
10. AVLS sound feature
11. music playback
12. multiple themes
13. fully customizable backgrounds
14. usb connectivity
15. Ad-hoc multiplayer
16. Infrastructure multiplayer
17. virtual keyboard
18. psp magazines and comics
19. Playstation 1 emulator included
20. 3:4 aspect ratio LCD screen (480x272)
"Homebrew Enabled" Sony PSP
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. PSP HTTPD allows psp to be used as a web server
2. PSP FTPD allows psp to be used as an FTP server
3. Peldet (or others) are telnet programs that allow you to make phone

calls, even though you can't talk back.
4. VNC (virtual network computing) allows for people to remotely control a

desktop computer from the psp
5. AKFIM allows for all major instant messaging clients to be used
6. even more advance music/ video/ image programs
7. music synthesizers like pspkick
8. PSPRadio can play internet radio - also play local .mp3 files
9. PDA programs like PSP PDA allows the psp to function like a PDA (text/

calendar etc.)
10. enables text viewers
11. paint programs
12. GPS functionality
13. calculator functions - also functions as a ti-92 graphing calculator
14. IR Remote - can control over 5,000 infrared devices. If it has a pronto

hex code - it can be controlled.
15. PSP Weather can download your local weather forcast for you
16. can control iTunes/ Winamp remotely
17. ability to customize the flash0 which allows to change icons/ backgrounds/ gameboots etc.
18. E-M-U-L-A-T-O-R-S
1. Amiga 500
2. Amstrad CPC
3. Apple II
4. Atari (various versions)
5. BBC Micro Computer
6. Capcom Play System 1 and 2
7. Chip 8
8. ColecoVision
9. Commodore 64
10. DosBox
11. Gameboy/ Gameboy Color
12. Gameboy Advance
13. HitBit
14. HP48
15. Intellivision
16. Macintosh
17. MAME
18. MGT Sam Coupe
19. MSX
20. Neo Geo
21. Nintendo 64
22. Nintendo NES
23. Odyssey
24. PC-8801
25. PC-9801
26. Playstation 1
27. PSP itself
28. ScummVM
29. Sega Gamegear
30. Sega Mastersystem
31. Sega Genesis / Megadrive
32. Super Nintendo Entertainment System
33. Thomson T07-70
34. Ti-92 - mentioned previously
35. Turbo Grafx
36. PC Engine
37. Vectrex
38. Wonderswan
39. x86
40. ZX Spectrum
41. ZX81 Sinclair
19. Ability to play PSP game backups
20. Ability to play any homebrew game any third/ independent developer has made

Now... a STOCK Nintendo DS has less than 10 key features about it, and most are dwarfed by the PSP's abilities. The PSP on the other hand has over twice as many "stand out" characteristics, and most of them are ADDED FEATURES that the DS doesn't have the ability to do!

Homebrew itself on the DS, which costs quite a bit of money - about $75 + shipping charges (when you only need a memory stick for the PSP and 4gb cards are now $80 or lower online), is completely ridiculous and minuscule compared to the advancements in homebrew on the PSP. Not to mention --- the universal remote capabilities alone are worth thousands upon thousands of dollars by themselves and along with having VNC capabilities and graphic calculator abilities, the PSP pays for itself INSTANTLY upon purchase.

Total Points:
DS = 11 key features
PSP = 81 key features

When all is said and done, this isn't even worth debating. The PSP outmatches the DS by a completely landslide margin and I honestly CAN'T BELIEVE how some people actually believe that the DS is better. Sometimes it's best to weigh the FACTS and THEN pass judgment. Get real guys - seriously. Pokemon and Mario are great franchises, but when you grow past 13-15 years old then I'd think those start to have less of an impact.

I think everyone's opinions were based off games, since they were supposed to be hand held gaming systems.
But if it was based off anything other then games, I believe this would be one of the only times I would use the word "PWNED".

They weren't both "supposed to be handheld gaming systems". The PSP has been advertised as a multimedia platform since it was birthed. The difference between to two systems is monumental by itself, but add homebrew into the mix and there is no limit to what the PSP can do.

They are completely different electronic devices. From a multimedia perspective, obviously the PSP takes the cake easily. From a gamer's perspective, the differences between the two systems tends to lean. If you want games that are somewhat repetitive, quick fun and leave much to be desired, you probably like the Nintendo DS. The game library for the Nintendo DS is even more full of "child-like" games than the Gamecube was, and the Gamecube was shunned because of it EVEN THOUGH it was MORE powerful than a PS2. Don't get me wrong, I love my Gamecube, but there's only so many quality titles to choose from. This is the same way, but worse with the Nintendo DS. 90% of the games are "PG" type games. 9% are your "young teen" type games, and 1% is the more juicy titles for more mature gamers.

I'm a gamer, through and through. I'm no fanboy of any system or company. But when it comes to deciding on what is a better next generation portable video gaming device, and the options are the DS and PSP, the truth is very evident. The grass is green, the sky is blue, and the PSP is better than the DS.

I'm not a graphic-lover either. For me, it's nearly solely about gameplay... but that said, it's too hard for me to see a NEW game on the market come to a "next generation" gaming system and see that it's worse than games made for the PREVIOUS system(s) that were made.
