How to play PSP Homebrew Games

obviously i'm a noob here and i've search around these forums and still haven't found a nice step by step although i did come across a thread by brentbizzle which explained how to do a hard-modify on a battery as well as making a magic memory stick.... but my question is what after?

anyone know which programs i have to install and how?
where i can find homebrew games (do the small game files offered on pspbrew.com work)?
how do i load the games?
do i have to make a custom firmware?

if anyone could help me with step by step to get my PSP (v 1.50) working i would greatly appreciate it. i understand that there may already be threads up that explain in detail how to do all this so if someone could provide links i would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance. :)

You can download homebrew games here. His psp is 1.50. You can automatically upgrade from 1.50 to a custom firmware.
You stick homebrew games in the GAME150 folder (If the homebrew game comes with 2 folders, one with a % and one without)

looks like it's a 1.5 as he said

but if you just purchased it, it's not a 1.5, so if your sure that it is a 1.5 then there is alot you can do with it, I would start by upgrading to the latest custom firmware, which i believe is 3.90 m33-2 this gives you alot of options to run games and homebrew as most any game you buy will force you to upgrade to a newer official firmware in order to play them. With the 3.90 m33-2 you can install a 1.5 patch and run most all homebrew with the 1.5 kernal active. I have NesterJ for example on my psp so i can play most any nintendo game that i can find a file for. You can run those homebrew games that you'll never hear about unless you are a homebrewer. So Far as homebrew goes i only have a couple programs which include IrShell that lets you run your tv and other devices with your psp (granted you can find the correct codes) which i have found difficult.

So let some peeps know some more info and you'll have no problem.

if you want to start upgrading you can download the cfw installers from the download's portion of the website.

Once i upgrade my PSP to a CFW, how do i load the app and start playing games? i don't see anyway to start up the games...

an example of a game comes with ICON0 (PNG File), PARAM.SFO (SFO File), PIC1 (PNG File), SECURE (BIN File), SND0.AT3 (AT3 File)... should i just be loading all of these to the "GAME150" folder? what do you mean by %?

would this all be the same if i load in CFO files?

Thanks in advance... you guys are life savers.

Yes, but if you install a custom firmware, there really won't be a need for that. All custom firmwares now utilize the 1.50 kernel just like firmware 1.50 does, thus making any custom firmware technically superior to version 1.50. On top of that, you will then have a "recovery mode" to use in case your PSP gets bricked. If it does, you can just recover it! ;)

i've heard that with newer games though you cannot play with anything but the upgrade that they include... is that false?

That's true. For instance, if you have firmware 2.00 and the game requires version 2.60, you would normally have to upgrade to 2.60. However, if you had, say, custom firmware 3.03 oe-c or something like that, you'd be able to play that firmware 2.60 game just fine.

The newest custom firmware is 3.90 m33. You will need a 1.50 kernel add-on to make 1.50 kernel accessible, but that's really not a problem. If you get 3.90 m33 installed, we can easily help you with the 1.50 kernel add-on.

This was actually a spam thread, but I used it to the brew's benefit. It's a tutorial for loading standard homebrew. That should give you a pretty good idea about how to load homebrew games. We also have a Brewpack Generator that should provide you with the emulators and applications that many would consider "essentials".

To make a few points on these questions:

1. A game that comes with an ICON0, PARAM.SFO, PIC1 etc. is actually an example of what is needed to make an EBOOT.PBP file... so I'm not sure what you downloaded, but you don't install anything to the memory stick if it has those files out in the open. Those are supposed to be the files that makes up the EBOOT.PBP, which is the file format that is recognized on the PSP to run games and applications from the memory stick. What, may I ask, did you download that has those files?

2. I think you mean .CSO files, and any custom firmware is capable of loading .CSO files. The .CSO files are compressed versions of .ISO files. Basically, if you wanted to play a UMD game backup from the memory stick, that's the best way to do it.

if you are going to install (for example) the home brew app. NesterJ which runs nintendo games, you would download it from the download section of this website. I t will be a zip folder that you will need to unzip, for this you need a program like winzip or winrar<--- (this is what i use) find it at www.tucows.com it's free, then after you unzip it you will have two folders, one just called nesterj and another called nesterj%. in these folders are where things like your roms and skins go, in this example nesterj% has the eboot file and that's it, while the nesterj folder has subfolders that include one called <genie, instuctions, roms, save and state, it also have the files eboot, famicom and menu. these are what you would put in your folder for games. this should be your file path
i assume your psp folder would be G:
G:
PSP:
GAME150:
here you will see your NesterJ and NesterJ% folders
Again you place your roms for NesterJ the NesterJ subfolder of Roms. however you will have to find the roms yourself.
if you have cfw 3.90 m33-2 you would simply put the nesterj and nesterj% in the game folder rather than the game150 folder, but you have to tell your psp to use the 150 kernal from the recovery menu.At this point you would disconnect your psp from your computer and find your NesterJ emulator in the game region of your psp.

happy brewing, pm me if you want help updating your system to a new cfw.
