Playing new games on an original 1.5 psp

I have a PSP 1000 (fat) with the original 1.5 firmware. I've also got a bunch of homebrew stuff on it but newer games require software updates to play. What application(s) would I need in order to play a new UMD without allowing it to upgrade my firmware, and what directory would it go in?
Thanks

just update to custom firmware... there a starters guide in the tutorial section. You'll need to update to 3.52 m33 to be able to update to the more recent custom firmwares (4.01 m33 and 5.00 m33)

1.5 has always been my favorite firmware, however, you can't really do anything with it anymore....
Get the new 5.02 M33-6 custom firmware.
Oh, and hey there!
You've been gone a while!

Hey, yeah I've been super busy. Bought a house, working full time, started my PhD. I'm finally at a point where I can mess with this stuff again. So 1.5 is now not the firmware of choice huh? So Ill take your advice and upgrade. What about PS3 compatability? I'm assuming that if I connect the two that the PS3 it will try to force me upgrade to the latest official firmware and make it useless. Is this pretty much correct?

Nope. It really doesn't care.

I keep my PSP on the latest custom firmware which has a firmware number lower than the OFW. When I connect the psp to my ps3, it doesn't prompt for an update. I'm guessing the only requirement is a psp running any firmware which has the remote play function built in.

If you download the newest m33 firmware im sure it will say what version is needed (if any) before upgrading to the latest.
