Different custom firmwares have the same differences as regular firmware.
With each update comes new features.
Sometimes a custom firmware like 5.00 M33-2 will be updated to 5.00 M33-3.
It doesn't add features, it just fixes problems within the firmware itself that the coder found.
Sometimes when Sony updates the PSP with really small numbers, like 3.5 to 3.51 and then to 3.52, they're just fixing small problems they find too instead of using a different number at the end like in 5.00 M33-3.
