But this only happens in-game? It's not impossible for one of the tiny "struts" inside the PSP to break under pressure (they help hold the PSP from caving in on itself). One of mine broke once a long time ago and I used some tweezers to get it out from under the directional pad without taking the faceplate off. Your problem is truly an odd one though...

yeah, if you really know what your doing, you might want to look a little deeper to the soldering connections. There might be a wire loose, or it might be shorting out somewhere.

Yea my guess is that it could be shorting out. Has the PSP unit been exposed to high humidity or condensation? Water damage COULD be the culprit as well.

not very high. The PSP's security is better than any computer or other handheld device on the market!

it just doesn't make any sense for this to be hardware related and only occur at certain times

If your psp had a virus, it would brick. So the problem is definitely hardware related and the reason that it only does it at certain times is because in some games the analog isn't even supported so it won't scroll down anyways - same with the XMB. But with some games, like Socom, the analog is part of the controls, so it locks while moving down. I'm sorry that cleaning and reassembling the unit didn't work. My only suggestion would be to (just for safe measure) also clean the d-pad and if the problem persists, look into analog replacement options locally or on ebay.

so the fact that i can take the analog stick completly out and still have the problem means that it's most likely a problem on the board its self?

It seems so. I'd use an air can to possibly push anything out that may be causing a disturbance. Also, you may want to consider upgrading the firmware. Doing so may fix a problem in the flash of the PSP's memory and be able to fix the problem.

i finnaly had few minutes to take second look. i took apart two PSPs and compared, found out that the PSP with disfunctional analog stick is actually missing a very small rectangular peice of what looks like silicon with four gold wires running through it to connect the four connectors on the board to the connectors on the analog stick. any ideas on how to get one these? or make one?

(the picture shows the working PSP with peice intact -in the blue circle)

That piece should come with the analog stick replacement part...check ebay for it. But ask the buyer to double check.
It's Also sold here...
