What is Firmware ?

I am trying to put games on my psp but people are saying you have to have firmware what is it ?

You have to have the "correct" firmware. Under the "settings" menu there is a submenu called "system settings". Click on that and scroll down to "system information" and the psp will tell you the "system software" (another term for firmware).
