Update:
Some users were reporting issues when using the Pack Generator with Mac OSX and also there has been some confusion as to the actual extraction to root process.  I'm happy to report that we've solved the issue of the Mac corrupted .zip files, and have updated the Pack Generator with instructions on how to install on each different OS.  Hopefully that will solve most users problems.  Enjoy!

WiiBrew is proud to present the Wii Pack Generator! For those of you who aren't familiar with the concept of a Pack Generator, I'll give you a quick rundown. The Wii Pack Generator is a web based utility that allows you to select from the most recent, up to date, and high quality homebrew for your Nintendo Wii and create a custom pack. All of the homebrew you select will be added into a .zip or .exe file with the correct structure for easy, ready to go extraction onto your SD card.

Get homebrew on your Wii, the easy way! Just select what you want, download, extract to the root of your SD card, and run using the Homebrew Channel! Don't have the Homebrew channel, but have Twilight Princess? Have no fear, we've got you covered. Just download the necessary files at the top of the homebrew list, run the Twilight Hack (we've got a video tutorial if you don't know how), and the Homebrew Channel will be installed automatically for you. Ready to start downloading? Then simply click the Wii Pack Generator banner or follow the link below. Special thanks goes out to BrentBizzle for his hard work with updating and filling the Pack Generator to make all of this possible!  If you like our Pack Generator or need help, be sure to join our forums and let us know!  We always appreciate getting new members in the Brewology community!

Wii Dunce Cap

Thanks to an inadequate response from Nintendo, bushing has made the decision to go public with his ISO loading DVD loading exploit.  Essentially what this means is that all users, including those without a modchip, will now be able to access to files stored on their own DVD-R.  This really opens up a lot of useful possibilities with countless homebrew applications.  Check out what folks at HacMii had to say:

Quote:

Note: this is not a backup loader, in any way, shape, or form. If you’re looking for a backup loader, please move along.

While Nintendo did reply to bushing’s open letter, he has not succeeded in establishing a conversation with an engineer about the issue. Furthermore, we have learned that they received and read at least two of the original three e-mails that were sent prior to the open letter, and decided not to reply (in fact, one of their replies was to one of the original e-mails, but only after the open letter was posted). Therefore, we can only conclude that they are not very interested in the issue.

As many of you may already know or have deduced, the bug in our open letter referred to a way of reading DVD-Rs (and Video DVDs) without the use of a modchip. Several people have investigated the bug independently, and they’ve gotten pretty close. However, we did discover an easier way of enabling this mode from homebrew, which, among other things, does not require any changes to IOS at all. This method is also relatively difficult to transform into some sort of backup loader.

Erant has been developing a library that uses this trick to enable DVD access for homebrew. We hope to release it this coming week, after a few details have been polished. svpe and dhewg have been working on a native mplayer port that uses this library to play back DVDs, which we hope to release as a proof-of-concept together with the library. We also have DVD-loading versions of snes9x and Genplus.

Non-modchip users will not need a custom IOS. Ironically, this method doesn’t work for users of some modchips. Therefore, these users will require a patched IOS using the well-known UnencryptedRead patch (the library will automatically use it if needed). We’ll try to release a somewhat more user-friendly version of patchmii dedicated to this task together with the library.

Could this mean an eventual ISO or DVD loader for downloaded backup games?  Only time will tell, but for now I can safely say Nintendo should be nominated as "Dunce of the Week" for their lack of and follow through with getting this patched.  I have a feeling this could come back to bite them…

TVersityTVersity 1.0 RC2 has just been released lately, with some much needed features added, as well as some enjoyable ones. One of my most favorite changes has to be the support for album art. The image isn't limited to the icon that Windows Media Player or Winamp produce, but you can also use your own art by using the naming convention included in the readme. While this release isn't a full on v1.0 release, it is still very close. The album art interface is also not limited to Wiis but any HTML (PS3's, Blackberries, iPhones, PSP's, etc.) and Flash (Wii!) interface. Here is the changelog for your viewing pleasure:

Quote:

New Features:
-Album art support is now available and is compatible with the Sony PS3 as well as with the HTML interface (PSP, iPhone, Blackberry, etc.) and flash interface (Wii). Album art relies on JPEG files conforming to certain naming conventions that are present in the same folder as music tracks. These files can be created by either Windows Media Player or WinAmp and TVersity will pick them up, or users can add them manually.
-Individual YouTube videos can now be added by pointing the browser to a specific video on YouTube and dragging and dropping the address bar icon to TVersity (or copying and pasting the URL).

Bug Fixes:
-MShare now refreshes as fast as it was in 0.9.11.4.
-No files are periodically added to the Temporary Internet Files folder while the GUI is running (browser caching was turned off).
-Fix crashes when adding/refreshing some FLAC and some MP3 files.
-Flash interface is now more reliable when switching from one live stream to another and then going back to first one.
-TVersity service was failing to start on machines that had a non ASCII character in their hostname.

Uno!

Homebrew developer kriogeN has just updated his great homebrew game "UNO" for the Wii to version 4. This update includes something we all can love, improved graphics! Seems like a fun game to me. UNO allows 2 to 4 players that can play against each other across the internet. This update also includes a couple more minor changes, which can be viewed in the readme. So now the directions, excuse me if my Spanish is a little rusty (as well as googles) but here it goes:

Quote:

Directions:
In the main menu indicates if it wants to act as a server for 2 to 4 players or want to become a customer, once selected you'll have to wait until all players are connected. As all are connected server distributed charts and start playing the first connected user (normally the player who acts as a server, but could be another if someone connected before this establish its own connection).

If you have more cards in your hand you can see (more than 7 letters) you can move hand with the left and right buttons.

To select a letter you put on top and press B (the letter selected will appear in the foreground as you move your hand), if you have no cards to make (or think you do not have) hit the button and draw a new 2 letter. Clicking the button home saldrás your turn the game, but other users are blocked (expects to receive from a socket that no longer exists)

If this is not your turn seem that the game has been hanged, but is not so.

This may be a bit of old news for some but it is quite notable.  Nintendo announced at E3 that they confirmed a new addon for the Wiimote called WiiMotionPlus.  They have also added that the sequel to Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, will use this addon for the first time.  The game is said to inclue jet skiing, sword fighting, and disc throwing. It will probably include more games by its release.  Will this be the next Wii Play bundled with the new accessory?  Who knows, we'll just have to wait and see.

It looks like yet another security flaw has been found in Nintendo's Wii.  A Wii hacker by the name of bushing is reporting that he and his team has come across a major security flaw in the Wii that would allow for the playing of pirated games on an unmodified Wii Console.  Luckily for Nintendo, he intends to tell them of this issue so it can be properly patched before it gets public.  No response has been received yet, but I really hope for Nintendo's sake that they respond and don't take this issue lightly.  They're software attachment rate really can't afford to be any lower than it already is…

Quote:

Dear Nintendo,

As part of our efforts to understand how the Wii works, we believe we
have found a security issue that could allow pirated Wii games to be
played on an unmodified Wii console.

I would like to speak to an engineer about this — please have one contact me at bushing (at) gmail.com.

Sincerely,
bushing

P.S. Sorry for posting this publicly — I tried emailing you three times
and never received a response. I am trying to follow the model set forth
in http://www.wiretrip.net/rfp/policy.html, so your timely response
would be appreciated.

XLink Kai

Team XLink has just released a new version of XLink Kai, a program that allows you to play System Link and Ad Hoc games globally over the internet.  The best thing is, its absolutely free!

Quote:

What's the point?

XLink Kai(info) 7.4 began a few months ago to address the following issues:
1. Internationalization – the existing Kai UI does not support many languages and character encodings.
2. Platform Independence – Linux and OS X client software is no longer feature compatible with the Windows client
3. Unified Development – numerous versions and variants of the engine and client exist creating compatibility issues and fragmented development/support.

Team XLink prides itself as a 'Global Community' of gamers. To us, this means people who speak different languages, who use different Operating Systems, and who live all over the globe should be able to connect with one another and make Team XLink their home. Our year to year userbase growth and concurrent player statistics tells us we've been making excellent strides towards our global ambitions. Still, to truly move forward with the project, we need to address infrastructure and compatibility issues so that we have a solid platform that encourages further growth. Kai 7.4 addresses these issues and provides a solid foundation for future plan that simply would not be possible with the previous versions of Kai.

So what's new?

The biggest change to Kai is somewhat invisible–the code. Kai was designed primarily as a Windows-based system with compatibility for Linux/OS X (and other *nix systems) added later through the Kaid project and numerous third-party clients. This created a rift in development where any features added to the Windows Engine and Client needed to be added to Kaid and the third-party clients needed to be updated. A small change in the Windows client required all the other clients to be updated. Updates to the Windows engine (ex: new PSP MAC addresses) required Kaid be updated. As developer interest in Kaid and the many clients waned, it has become increasingly difficult to add any new features without breaking existing compatibility for those not using Windows. To address this, Kai 7.4 uses a single codebase and non-proprietary libraries so that the same code that compiles the Windows binary also compiles under Linux, OS X, BSD, etc. This required removing all the MFC code from Kai and replacing it with platform-independent alternatives like the Boost and wxWidgets libraries. With this unified codebase, future updates and changes will be made available on all supported Operating Systems at the same time.

The most visible change found in Kai 7.4 is the Client Web UI. Instead of designing multiple User Interfaces for every supported OS and every language we decided to drawn on the strength of existing cross-platform technology: the web browser. The Kai 7.4 engine contains a small web server which serves the client to your web browser (Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer(info), etc.) and communication between the web browser and the Engine is achieved using Ajax programming. Aside from the obvious elimination of platform compatibility issues, switching to a browser-based client has some wonderful side effects:
1. Updates and additions to the client are served immediately without the need to restart the Engine.
2. The client is 'skinable' allowing users to develop and share their own customizations.
3. Kai can integrate other web technologies such as streaming audio and video.
4. Kai can be controlled using embedded systems with compatible web browsers (ex: iPhone).
5. The Kai engine can be accessed and controlled remotely via the web browser ( chat from work/school )

Another notable improvement found in Kai 7.4 is the support for uPnP routers. Most modern routers support uPnP allowing on-the-fly port mapping. When started behind a uPnP router, Kai just works–no port forwarding or router configuration required.

Lastly, all language has been stripped out of both the Engine and the Web UI Client and replaced with language templates. Currently, English and Japanese translations are available; however, support for Korean, Spanish, and many other languages are being added as translation becomes available through the community.

Rock Band 2 Logo

The first details are emerging about Rock Band 2, and it looks like EA and Harmonix are doing a lot of things right with the sequel. This proves to be a welcomed change of pace from some of EA's other franchises (*cough*, *cough*, Madden).  It looks the game will be hitting the 360 this September, followed by the Wii, PS3, and PS2 versions "later in the year".

Quote:

1. Better Hardware
According to Harmonix: "Quieter, more realistic, and more reliable instruments…"

2. Third Party Hardware
"We're also actively welcoming new peripheral makers to make instruments for our game. Just like real instruments, we want players to be able to choose what instruments they use…"

3. Backwards Compatibility
Songs you purchased for Rock Band will work for Rock Band 2. Future Rock Band songs will work for both games.

4. More Meaning
"We have several new modes that not only provide new ways for you to experience your music library, but also new ways for you to transition from Expert to real instruments…"

Backwards compatibility is a huge plus, and to me a definite advantage over Guitar Hero IV. It's good to finally see the songs I buy not become a complete waste when I sell the old game to buy the sequel (I'm looking at you, Guitar Hero II). Plus, with the "quieter, more realistic, and reliable instruments" (read: We added a sunburst to the guitar.), I may actually spend more time playing my drums/guitar, and less time sending them in for repair. I'm sold.

Really though, more meaning? If Harmonix ever really wants to create a true parallel between the Rock Band guitar and the real guitar, they're gonna need a bit more than five buttons. But hey, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt with the "transition from Expert to real instruments…" thing. They did a pretty damn good job making the guitar look "real" this time around, so I suppose anything is possible.
