2.01 iPhone

Apple has just released iPhone firmware 2.0.1 which seems to address many of the problems users faced with the new 2.0 firmware. Here is what users have been saying who have updated to 2.01:

  • Backup process for the iPhone is much faster.
  • SMS typing faster.
  • Some users are reporting that the iPhone seems a lot snappier after the update.
  • iPhone Dev Team's Pwnage Tool does not work with iPhone firmware 2.01 so as recommended earlier if you have jailbroken or unlocked your iPhone then do NOT update.
  • Contacts app loads faster.
  • Safari seems to be significantly more responsive after the upd
  •

Again, it is reported that Pwnage Tool does NOT work with the new firmware. If you have your iPhone unlocked or jailbroken DO NOT update as it will remove them.

Please leave feedback if you do update and let us know what your experience is.

NetShareOne of the greatest features missing from the iPhone has been the ability to tether it to a laptop. NullRiver is making this feature possible by releasing their NetShare software. Here is the description from the AppStore:

"Share your iPhone's EDGE or 3G Internet connection with your computer using NetShare. NetShare provides a SOCKS5 proxy for your computer to connect to."

So basically what this does is turn your iPhone into a wireless modem for your laptop to connect to the internet when there is not a connection around. There are still some bugs to work out in the software but it is looking very promising. It is currently being sold for $9.99 on the AppStore. If anyone tries it out, please post your feedback and let us know what you think.

Apparently hidden in the code of the 2.1 firmware we're anxiously awaiting to make our iPhones less laggy and crashy (and maybe add copy and paste!) is a reference to a new iPod touch model. The current iPod touch designation is "iPod1,1" but there's a string in the code for an "iPod2,1" which points at a brand new iTouch.

For historical comparison, the original iPhone is "iPhone1,1" while the iPhone 3G is "iPhone1,2" as we found out during the 2.0 update madness, so there's definitely a case to be made. And late summer is new iPod season. What new whiz-bang features do you think would be in a whole new iPod touch?

Great news to the world of 1.2.0 Jailbroken iPod Touch/iPhone owners. Word has it that "Installer.app" is almost complete and will be available soon! In which case would cause a ton more homebrew capabilities onto the new 2.0 firmware. This will be a great alternative to cydia because it has been more widly used and it looks great. Look up to see screenshots!

Heres a heads up for all "Non-Apple" Devs out there. It seems the a few days after the first unlocked iPhone 3G was born, Apple rolled out firmware 2.1 for Apple Developers.  Check it out:

    iPhone Dev Team wrote:

Dev Team’s planetbeing released xpwn, cmw released winpwn, and Apple pushed out 2.1 firmware to beta testers. And meanwhile the pursuit of the 3G unlock goes on. Whew that’s a lot of activity for one week!

Here’s a screenshot of 2.1 running on an unlocked iPhone 1G. Pwnage remains in effect. Unlike all other jailbreaks (and unlocks for 1G), we believe Pwnage to be fixable only via a hardware revision. So far Pwnage has worked for 1.1.4, all eight (!) 2.0 betas, 2.0 itself, and now 2.1 beta1.

Right now you are probably thinking, "aww… not another unofficial realease".  Lucky for you, this one is straight from CMW, naturally making this version the "official" release of the windows-based 2.0 jailbreak and unlock tool.  Check out the changelog and how-to below, and then get those iPods and iPhone cranking!

    Quote:

    Changelog:

    - Support for both 1.1.4 and 2.0
    - Custom Image Support
    - Custom Payload Support
    - 3g iPhone support

    How To:

    1) First create a custom IPSW using the IPSW Builder.
    2) Click "Ipwner" and browse for the custom IPSW that you just created. This will pwn itunes and allow you to flash Custom IPSW files via DFU mode
    3) Once you have pwned Itunes, put your phone into DFU mode.
    4) Once you are in DFU mode Itunes will pop up and then you can hold shift and click restore and browse to your custom IPSW file.

It looks like the source for the 2.0 version of WinPwn (now called X-Pwn) is out in the wild.  X-Pwn is a Windows tool that unlocks an iPhone or iPod Touch running on Apple's latest firwmare.  With the source out, it shouldn't be long until an easy-to-use GUI comes around.

    Hey guys,

The development sources for xpwn 0.3, the firmware 2.0 version of our cross-platform jailbreaking library/command-line utility have been pushed onto github. We’ve tested it on Linux, Windows XP, and Windows Vista for both the iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G thus far, but since it uses the same FirmwareBundles files as PwnageTool, and we know those work for the iPod touch, there ought not be any problems.

Being a suite of command-line utilities, this release is meant primarily for developers. While you can certainly jailbreak (both 3G and first-gen) and unlock (first-gen) with it, it’s not really something you want to try without reading the lengthy, detailed README. If you don’t have the patience to do that, this release is not for you.

We’re hoping the community will use this to create useful, easy-to-use jailbreak related applications for all platforms. This is an open source endeavor and you are more than welcome to fork it, fix our bugs, submit patches, etc. Now it’s time for you guys to step up to the plate.

Hello everyone, here is a little review I did about my results after jailbreaking my iPod Touch with Pwnage Tool 2.0, just for you MacBrew Viewers and those occasional YouTube Viewers.  I used the Mac version of Pwnage Tool 2.0.1, but I should note that it is technically no longer Mac exclusive.  There is now a Jailbreak method for the Original iPhone via Windows found here. Although it isn't advised for any n00bs out there, it is an alternative for advanced users that don't own a Mac.

UPDATE: It looks like the iPhoneDevTeam has come out with a new version of their Pwnage Tool.  This release just has a few minor adjustments to make things easier on some users that had issues jailbreaking with the first version:

    Quote:

    - It auto-finds the bl39 and bl46 files better, if they’re on your computer.
    - It creates the ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support/ folder if not present, which should help with some 1600 errors people have been having.
    - Many people have reported the PwnageTool not starting up at all (the icon never stops bouncing). This issue should be resolved now.
    - The Sparkle AppCast URL is fixed in this version, so automatic updates should work for future releases.

Check out the updated download link on the bottom of the page.

Pwnage Tool 2.0The folks over at iPhoneDevTeam have released their much awaited Pwnage Tool 2.0.  For those that dont already know, this brilliant piece of (mac only) software will let you unlock and/or jailbreak any iPhone or iPod Touch running Apple's latest firmware.

We’ll be releasing a more official announcement soon, but we wanted to get the tool out there. We sincerely hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed making it Smile

Update: Just to clear up some confusion over what this actually does: yes, it jailbreaks and unlocks older iPhones, and jailbreaks iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touches. We only support the 2.0 firmwares.
