New 2.17 update is out:
I couldnt get a lot of info on this although it looks like a bug fix. So I translated the Japanese site and this is what I got:

Concerning system software version 2.17 update [ 2008.03.13 ]
From 2008 March 13th,®the update which renews the substance performance of PS3 was started. With the latest update, version of system software becomes 2.17, the following function is renewed.
* The main function which is renewed with version 2.17
- In the PLAYSTATION®3 standard software of part, stability of operation was improved.
- The PlayStation 2 standard software whose installation to®the hard disk is possible was added.
