PSP News

Earlier today, forum member Eckounltd, was eager to let us know that Dark_AleX has released his firmware 1.50 patch for custom firmware 3.71. Now, this version is only for FAT PSP units, but don't worry too much slim owners, you can always wait for developers to port over their projects or you can use the new eloader. On a more unfortunate note, this is all that was promised from the hacking legend, Dark_AleX, so this may be his last work.. but until we know for sure, happy homebrewing!

Yes, we here at PSPBrew will allow you to take a short break to wipe the poop out of your pants… ready now? Good. It's true, Dark AleX has come through again for the masses. I'm sure you're all familiar with Pandora's Battery by now, well this new installment of Dark AleX's work is based off of the same thing. The catch? – it works on both slim PSP units as well as the fat PSP units. At the current moment, you are free to brick any PSP you want, and still be able to recover it. Truly groundbreaking. Kudos to Dark AleX!

This will bring your PSP's firmware version to 3.71. Because of this, you will need the following files in order for this to work.

Despertar Cementerio Unbricker

Firmware 1.50 (US)

Firmware 3.40 (US)

Firmware 3.71 – available at Sony.com.

This just in! -forum member .Yunoko was kind enough to announce news of Sony's newest creation – a Custom XMB Theme Maker! That's right. Us here at PSPBrew are just as shocked as anyone else. Lately we've seen a side of Sony that we haven't seen in the past. Sony has begun to slowly morph into a company that tries to adhere to what PSP owners REALLY want. First the PS1 emulator, then the various fixes that the Slim addresses, next comes downloadable custom themes, and now Sony has gone so far as to release their own tool for Custom XMB Themes! If you're interested, check out the screenshot below, or better yet, download the tool from the link provided under the picture and make sure to share your creations with us in our new custom XMB forums!

Yes folks, it appears that Sony is, yet again, wisening up to the amazing abilities of the hackers. As many people may have already guessed, Sony’s official PSP-110 battery is already being shipped around. The battery is still exactly that – a battery, only it appears that Sony has made the new line of batteries have "anti-pandora" security features. There's still hope that the PSP will see a new version of the Pandora's Battery hack in the future, but for now at least, it is hindered. If you're still looking to get your hands on a second battery for Pandora's Battery, maybe getting a new, higher capacity battery for normal use is a better option (using your old battery for Pandora's Battery). It is known that there are certain batteries that are made by third-parties that are still capable of the Pandora's Battery hack… so that may also be an option as well. It is unknown at this time if those batteries are going to be upgraded as well or not. Stay tuned, and if we learn anything further – you'll learn along with us.

Well here it is folks, 3.71 Custom Firmware fresh on a platter. Yes, you've also read correctly…Team M33 is infact Dark_Alex. Rumor has spread rampant about "who figured it out first", but on the brew, our own forum member, bkfraiders7, was the member who brought this to light. Aparently for this release youll need to be at 3.52 M33-3 or 3.52 M33-4 on the fat PSP's or 3.60 M33 on the slim PSP's before being able to upgrade to the 3.71 custom firmware. Now that we have that out of the way, lets get into the details of this release…

3.71 M33 by M33=Dark_AleX

Changes in 3.71 M33:

- Now uses 3.71
- VSH Menu is not longer launched using HOME key, but using SELECT now. This is to not
interfere with the XMB function of home, which is now more useful in this firmware.
- Psp Slim: umdcache was allocating memory even when homebrew was launched, wasting
memory that homebrew programs may want to use. Now umdcache module is stopped before
it can allocate any memory, only in the case homebrew is launched.

Also, memory is unprotected for user memory usage by M33 core (only when homebrew is launched).
Developer, for a sample of how to use the extra memory, see the extra ram sample of the M33 sdk.

- Both version boot now from 3.XX ipl, and are independent of 1.50.

The main installer will not install 1.50 kernel anymore.
A 1.50 kernel addon for 3.71 M33 that will install inside 3.71 M33 will be released in a
few days (for fat only)

Note: due to some changes in kernel nids by Sony, you can expect a lot of kernel plugins not working anymore.
Programmers: refer to the sdk readme for details.

As always, make sure to follow the instructions that come with this package and take notice to its warnings as neither I or any members of pspbrew.com will take responsibility for your misfortunes.

I know it's been a while, but StrmnNrmn sure hasn't forgot about our Nintendo 64 emulation needs. In fact, this time around, he's even added in an extra feature for us to use. How does savestate support sound? Yea, sounds darn good. StrmnNrmn discusses, in his blog , that he's already implemented the feature and that he needs to work on the user interface a little bit before it's released. He also says that he's excited about having savestate support from a developer's point-of-view, as it will allow him to skip intro screens and work on other issues in a more timely manner. As far as anyone can tell, that's pretty much the main feature of this next release. He does say that there's, "a number of additional optimisations" that he wants to work on before releasing R13. Release date? – September 29th, or shortly after.

BOOSTER, the creator of the famed DevHook program and advancements in custom firmware, has released a handy little tool for those Pandora's Battery junkies out there.

With this new tool, you will be able to use a battery that you've converted to be used as a Pandora's Battery, as the primary battery. Before, trying to power a PSP unit on with the Pandora's Battery inserted was a joke. You weren't able to power the PSP without help from the AC cord. Now, what this little tool does, is write an IPL to the memory stick pro duo which allows the XMB to be booted into properly without having to revert the Pandora's Battery back to a normal battery. Useful? – yes, and also no. No because the battery will only work in your PSP with YOUR memory stick pro duo… but that may also be a good thing as well. Have a little brother or sister that bother you and try to use your PSP all of the time? Not a problem! Just take out your memory stick from the PSP and that sucker won't even turn on! Of course, it may be a bit of a hassle, but for those of you that may want to stick with your Pandora's Battery, at least now you have another option.

It's important to note that you should not install this on a memory stick that you used during the creation of the "magic memory stick". Also, 32mb memory sticks are not compatible with this. Make sure to READ ALL DOCUMENTATION CAREFULLY before installing this tool. Since we don't have this in our downloads section yet, just pick it up at any neighboring PSP hacking website.

Team M33 comes through again with another win for the homebrew scene. This is the first custom firmware ever made for the PSP Slim. Anyhow, here are the release notes for Custom firmware 3.60 for the Slim…

  • We are proud to present the first custom firmware for the PSP Slim, and the first custom firmware that runs using a 3.XX IPL (3.60).
  • 3.60 M33 for PSP Slim has all the features of 3.52 M33, except the 1.50 kernel support, as that kernel doesn't work properly on psp slim (hardware problems, screen problems). 3.60 M33 will load homebrew from GAME, GAME150 and GAME360 directories, but all will be executed with 3.60 kernel.
  • This mean that some homebrews done specifically for the 1.50 kernel cannot work on 3.60 M33. However, the adaptation of code to 2.XX+ kernels is not difficult, and homebrew developers can port their aplications to work in these firmwares.

As always, make sure to follow the instructions that come with this package and take notice to its warnings as neither I or any members of pspbrew.com will take responsibility for your misfortunes.

More great news arrives from Team M33. This new version of Popsloader is compatable on all current custom firmwares released to date (with the exception of the new 3.60 M33 for PSP Slim). For those of you who have been living in the dark, popsloader is basically a PSOne emulator for your PSP. Anyways, without further ado, here are the release details…

  • Added the remaining pops: 3.00-3.03
    • These pops require the following modules: kd/meaudio.prx kd/popsman.prx kd/pops.prx and vsh/module/pafmini.prx. As always, they go in seplugins/popsloader directory with the naming meaudio3xx.prx, popsman3xx.prx etc.
  • Added compatibility between savedata <= 3.30 and those of 3.40 and higher.
    • The thing works like this: If you have been playing in for example 3.52 pops, and then you select a pops from 3.00-3.30, popsloader will automatically convert the savedata into the old format.
    • The reverse operation, from old format to new format, will be done by Sony code with a confirmation dialog.
  • popsloader plugin work in 3.51 M33, 3.52 M33 and….. 3.60 M33 for PSP slim. Coming soon.

As promised, Fanjita and Team Noobz have delivered a downgrader and homebrew enabler (HEN) for 3.11 firmware users. In order to run the downgrader/HEN, you will require a European or US version of Lumines. It is also noted that this release will fix the problem with idstorage issues that disallowed TA-082 – TA-086 motherboards from upgrading past 3.30 on official firmwares.

Anyways, to clarify the details of this release a little bit more, heres what you can accomplish with this package…

This release consists of HEN for v3.11,  plus a v3.11 downgrader, and an idstorage key fixer for v3.11.  This allows you the choice of either

  • staying on v3.11 to run homebrew
  • downgrading to v1.50 to run homebrew or install custom firmwares, or
  • upgrading to official Sony firmwares v3.30 or beyond.

  •

    - Download

    - Buy Lumines
