PSP News

It seems that an anonymous group of 10 developers have gave a bit of insight as to whats in store for the future of psp custom firmware. They made note to mention that they are planning to create this new custom firmware by reverse-engineering Dark-Alex's work, and that their 3.51 custom firmware will surpass the quality of Dark-Alex's previous work. There is no mention of a release date, but keep posted for updates.

PSP

Yep, it's true. Russian developers who go by the name "Team M33" have just released there ground breaking custom firmware, called "3.51 M33". The future of homebrew just got a whole lot brighter due to this achievement. Of course, this firmware version includes all functions of the official firmware v3.51 but with homebrew compatibility. Here is a short list of features:
  • Better PSX emulation
  • Ability to launch (Some future)UMD's that require firmware v3.51
  • Direct launching of ISO's.
  • Ability to change the CPU speed.
  • (Of course) Recovery Mode
  • Customize your icons and more…
The instructions for this ground breaking firmware are included in a readme titled "readme.en" which can be opened by any text editing program. And always, Read the readme so you don't brick. Me nor any pspbrew member are responsible for your actions. Read the readme first before you install this firmware or ask questions. You also need firmware v1.50 or a custom firmware to install this firmware.

FW 3.60

Seems as though a user by the name of "PSP Fanboy" has gotten his hands on a PSP2, as it's being called. Surpisingly, the system was shipped with firmware v3.60. So instead of going through alot of words, I'm going to go ahead and make a list of some features. Although this is version 3.60, there is yet no real confirmation that the first gen of PSP's will have the compatibility.
  • USB Charge function.
  • UMD Cache feature to speed up UMD load times
  • Video-out function
  • Screensaver ability
  • More then likely, increased security
And alot more undiscovered/unannounced features. In relation to the video functionality, games are bordered, rendered at 480×272 pixels, and or progressive scan exclusively. The most important, probably, is the security. Not to much has been announced about it, but I'm sure we will find out in due time. For more pictures, please visit the link mentioned below.

flAstroHomebrew developer flatmush has just released his entry for the GBAX Coding competition, titled "flAstro". flAstro is a homebrew game in which is a polished version of the astro lander game, where u need to land a spacecraft on colored squares quickly and as gently as you can while avoiding damage. flAstro features Load/Save games, HiScores, Unlocks, In-Game Instructions, and much more. According to the developer, it has been extensively tested and is bug-free. The developer also states that the farther you get in the game, the harder it gets. Such as gravity becomes more of a problem, along with rocky terrain and damage received from bumps. Even though the game gets harder, you will be awarded bonus points for landing quickly, landing softly, landing close to the center of the square, and using fuel efficiently.

Here are the controls:

  • DPAD LEFT/RIGHT – Thrust left/right.
  • DPAD UP/DOWN – Navigate menus.
  • CROSS – Normal Thrust / Menu Select.
  • CIRCLE – Hyper Thrust / Menu back.
  • START – Pause Menu
  • SELECT – Take screenshot.

Note: This is a homebrew game, so it does require either 1.50 or a custom firmware to be played. Also, as always, read the readme included before you go asking questions.

cave_story
The popular Cave Story game made thousands of downloads. The game was originally developed by Pixel (Daisuke Amaya) but now ufo_z has brought us his un-official demo. He himself even got approval of the cave-story creator to go on with this project. His second demo release has made quite a bit of progress. His main feature would be using saves from the original
windows version on the PSP. The files filename and 290.rec needs to be Profile.dat (case sensitive).
Its one of my favourite classics and I hope it will be yours too.
Well thats about it. Enjoy Cave Story: Candidate for PSP.

Tamasky v0.0

Homebrew developer Lejournal just released his homebrew game "TamaSky". TamaSky is a game based off the "Tamagotchi" craze a few years back. Some of you may have also heard of Chocobo Run v0.1 which Lejournal also made. Tamasky v0.0 does has limited features (I'm sure v0.0 didn't give that away);however, is still very playable. Here is some description point's translated from French:
  • Screen titrates
  • Choice of only one Egg for the moment
  • Filling of the mess tin
  • Cleaning of the needs
  • Appearance of the needs for the animal by chance
  • Safeguard of the state of the animal
  • Animation of the cloud in the content of the screen
Lejournal also mentions that the user does not have to keep the PSP turned on for the little booger to stay alive. The game is synced with the PSP's internal clock. Now isn't that just nice?

Console Grab v1.0

Console Grab v1.0 has just been released by Anonymous D! Yea, pretty simple game. Fun, but simple. In console Grab, your goal is to grab as many consoles and handhelds as you can using a giant hand. And then, naturally, you are supposed to grab even more items to beat your high score. Pretty fun huh? Anonymous D states, to get the game working you need to "Place folder in psp/game150 or psp/game with 1.50 as you game kernel. 1.5 users will need to kxploit the eboot." Also, here are the controls so you don't spend countless minutes wondering what to do:
  • d pad = move hand
  • triangle = exit
  • x = grab or confirm
  • circle = increase hand speed
  • square = decrease hand speed
  • L = increase console speed
  • R = decrease console speed
Also, if you want to get some extra points, you can decrease the hand speed or increase the console speed. If you increase the speed though, then you will get less points. Dang cheaters. Hope you enjoy this game.
