CGP

A couple days ago this homebrew came out, which is a port from the PC version that was originally created by Axel Meierhöfer. This port is a really good representation of the original game and is a welcome addition to the homebrew library available for the PSP.

The idea is that you are the pilot of a space ship very far out in space where “Crazy Gravity” is in effect. The purpose of the game is to transport valuable cargo amidst a variety of obstacles in your way. Things like magnets and cannons are definitely things to be careful of as you’re trying to get the cargo to your home base.

The download links below are for the initial release and the release from just a little while ago which also includes a level editor!

PXDrum V1.0

Here’s a little program that should burn some time. The developer, Jum, has jam packed some nifty little features in this homebrew program. Our downloads section gained about 20 downloads as soon as this was added. Basically, if you’re unfamiliar with a drum machine program, it works like this. On the left-hand side you have different sound effects like “snare drum” or “clap”. Then, on the corresponding grid to the right, you check boxes in each row according to how often you want to play that particular sound. Once activated, the sequencer shows a line moving from left to right and when the line comes across the spots you marked on the grid, the noise will play, effectively allowing you to sample your own beats!

There’s been other drum machines that maybe have more features or looks, but this little homebrew is at least something else to keep you busy for a minute. Grab it from our downloads section by clicking the link below and get jamming.

Have you been wanting to waste hours of your days enjoying a PSP game lately but weren’t fully satisfied with the selection? Maybe now is the time to change that.

Resistance Retribution

A game many people had anticipated, Resistance Retribution, seems like it is defining a better business model for new games to follow. The PSP game lineup is arguably one of the weaker areas for the PSP. Some games you can tell were rushed, others too bland. Yesterday, however, the PSP scene has another one of the actual “great” games to add to the selection.

I’ve been scrambling for reviews and consumer-sided feedback for this game for a few days and just got my hands on the game myself. Resistance Retribution places you in the time frame between Resistance 1 and 2 on the Playstation 3 console. Your main character, James Grayson, is a protagonist on a mission to destroy Converting Centers that create more Chimera-infected people after he is forced to kill his own brother before he becomes fully-infected as a Chimera. Retribution offers a fairly dynamic storyline, easily-handled controls, and good graphics to boot. No, it isn’t Crysis quality, but the graphics are certainly more than what you’d expect on the PSP. The presentation of this game is similar to other great titles in the PSP lineup. The quality of presentation instantly reminded me of Vice City Stories as well as God Of War Chains of Olympus.

I can recommend this game to others. If you’re wanting a new experience on your handheld, this game will more than likely compensate your ill-feelings toward the PSP game library. Give it a shot.

Who here likes Sony? Show of hands? Ok, I figured there’d be a few of you. Even if you hate how Sony has handled the way they’ve marketed their products, showcased their hardware, or uselessly updated pointless aspects their products sometimes before addressing larger issues that homebrew coders developed workarounds for… (gasps for breath) well, to put it simply, if you hate how Sony has been managing itself, you aren’t alone, even though you like Sony for making your precious PSP.

Sony released their profit margins for their 4th quarter business earnings recently. The 4th quarter is usually the biggest quarter of the year, especially for many electronics businesses due to the holiday season shopping. As reported on Gizmodo, however, Sony has to acknowledge a 95% loss in profits due to harsh world economy. In Japan, they received 10.4 billion dollars for their 4th quarter this year…whopping ninteen and a quarter times lower than their profits the year previous – 200.2 billion.

It’s the day of updates! First Dark-Alex brings us 5.00 M33-5 then a few moments later he bumps out another revision bringing it to 5.00 M33-6. Listed are the updates to both revisions…

“5.00 M33-6

This update is a try to fix memory stick low speed since 3.80.

Instructions: Copy UPDATE folder /PSP/GAME/ and run.

If you come from a version prior to 5.00 M33, put sony update as 500.PBP in same folder, or let the program download it for you using a wifi connection.

Changes in 5.00 M33-5:

- A setting has been added to recovery, that, when enabled it may increase memory stick reading speed. (only on the psp, not in the pc).
By default it is disabled. If you installed 3.71 fatmsmod, do not use this setting, as its perfomance with 3.71 driver has not been tested.
Instead, reinstall 5.00 m33-4 using dc8 and update to 5.00 m33-5

Changes in 5.00 M33-6:

- Fixed a bug that made unbootable psp without memory stick or with a bad one.

The included file fat_comparison.html contains a comparison of perfomance between the 5.00 fat driver, the 3.71 one, and the 5.00 one with the speed up hack during the read of an iso.
The test was done on the game Valkyrie Profile in cso format in march33 mode. Other games, modes and applications different than iso reading showed similar results.”

Now for those of you who are still on official firmware, visit the tutorial section of our forums to find out how you can convert your PSP to custom firmware. For those of you already on custom firmware, the download for this update is linked below. Enjoy!

Sony rolls out a new update for our PSP firmware bringing it up to 5.03. For those of you interested, here are the changelogs for this update according to Eric Lampel…

“Hi, everyone, I wanted to give you a quick heads up that a new PSP firmware update, v5.03, will be released soon. This is a small update that improves system software stability during use of some features.”

Now for all of us on the brew scene, we already know what that changelog means. It’s basically an update to prevent the new exploit found in gripshift. For those of you who own 2000 or 3000 model PSP’s and would like to have homebrew, I would advise against updating your firmware from this point onward until the gripshift exploit is perfected. Of course, on the other hand…if you enjoy what Sony has to offer then by all means update.

Thanks to Devil May Cry for the tip off.

We all knew it was on its way. Now we see it in action! Homebrew enabler for the PSP 3000 and 2000 v3. While the files haven’t been released as of yet, the PSPGen team have given their reasons being that they need to find a second kernel exploit and that Sony will patch the exploit files upon release. This is definately great news to those of you who might own one of the aforementioned PSP models. We’ll keep you posted on the status of the operation. Video available on the source page.

It’s a good day for the PSP homebrew scene. MaTiAz, a well known developer on the brew scene has found an exploit that uses the gamesaves in Gripshift to run arbitrary code. Now while this is just a proof of concept, this is a huge door open towards being able to fully hack the latest 3000 models. Here are a few words quoted from MaTiAz himself…

“So, happy new year. I think presenting a new usermode exploit on the PSP is a good way to start 2009

GripShift has a buffer overflow vulnerability when loading savegames. The savegame contains the profile name which can be easily used to overwrite $ra.
The savegame file is pretty big (25kB) so you have lots of space to put your code there. I wrote a simple blob of code to paint the framebuffer completely white (to just indicate that arbitrary code is running).
The return address is located at offset 0xA9 in the file. In this poc it points to 0×08E4CD50 (which is only a few bytes after the return address), and the code starts at 0xCC in the file.

It was tested on 4.01M33-2 with US version of GripShift (ULUS10040), and psplink.prx, usbhostfs.prx and deemerh.prx loaded (also without psplink and usbhostfs). The decrypted savegame (sorry, couldn’t [be bothered to] get Shine’s savegame tool working so it’s in plaintext form) is in the SDDATA.BIN form which Hellcat’s Savegame-Deemer produces (thanks to him, if the program didn’t exist I wouldn’t have bothered with this.). Just copy the ULUS10040SAVE00 directory to /PSP/SAVEPLAIN/ and run the game. EDIT: yeah, don’t forget to have Savegame-Deemer working, duh.”
