“Today, MuscleNerd posted on his Twitter that the latest firmware has now been confirmed to be exploitable by a new exploit from pod2g that involved modification of the boot ROM. Looks like it’s confirmed not only for the iPhone 4, but also the newest iPod Touch that I posted about earlier, and the iPad. Right now, there is no user-friendly means of jailbreaking the new firmware for the public, but I’ll stay on the look-out for it and post when it comes out.” -crait

“Apple revealed their revamped iPod Touch today. It features a retina display (4 times more pixels) and a 2 cameras including a front-facing camera for Facetime. It also has the Apple A4, 3-axis gyro and iOS 4.1, and HD video recording. Let’s discuss it. :D
I think that the camera is long over due, but overall, it’s a nice upgrade.
8GB … $229
32GB …$299
64GB … $399
I definitely think that with these prices, it won’t outsell the 3DS like it has been outselling the other DS’s. Steve Jobs went on to say that since the sales of the iOS devices are so high, it currently has over 50% of the handheld gaming market.” -crait

Verizon took out a full-page ad in the New York Times to flaunt its hot new Android smartphone, Motorola’s Droid X, and stopped along the way to mock the iPhone 4’s notorious antenna problems. The ad took direct aim at Apple, saying consumers can hold the Droid X however they please without obliterating cellular reception. It’s clear that Verizon believes it has a winner on its hands with the Droid X and that, despite persistent rumors about the iPhone coming to Verizon, the cellular provider doesn’t need to play nice with Apple.

The New York Times advertisement ran on June 30 and listed the Droid X’s impressive specs, which rival those of the iPhone 4–a phone that is (unfortunately) still exclusive to AT&T. After the specs, the ad said, “And most importantly, it comes with a double antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like and use it just about anywhere to make crystal clear calls.” Ouch!

Apple’s iPhone 4 antennas–which are built on the phone’s exterior; a supposed revolutionary design meant to improve call quality–have been beaten to a pulp by the press. Class action lawsuits have even been filed. Meanwhile, Apple has been in denial, claiming it’s not a hardware concern but rather a software issue that falsely displays the number of signal bars. Reports have suggested that a soon-to-be-released iPhone software update, iOS 4.0.1, will fix the crisis.

So what does this mean for Verizon getting the iPhone? Bloomberg reported that the super-popular smartphone will appear on Verizon’s network in January 2011 (rumors like these go back years). But if Verizon is taking potshots at the iPhone 4, it seems unlikely to me that the network is holding its breath for a partnership with Apple and would rather focus its loyalties on Android-powered phones.

One of the most fantastic gaming devices/ services I recognized from this year’s E3 conference was “OnLive”. OnLive is a play on the word, “online”, and for fully-justifiable reasons. With OnLive, any compatible device that can connect and run the OnLive client with at least a download rate of 5mb/s will be able to play HD gaming content wherever they have internet access. The content is streamed through the client to whatever independent device that is compatible with the service and then is able to play HD content on that device.

At E3, the game shown off as a working title was Borderlands, an exceptional first-person shooter MMO game. The device that the game was played on was none other than Apple’s new iPad, a device known for being “just a large iPod touch”.

Microsoft has been questioned for a long time about making a hand-held gaming device and have dodged questions. Now, it seems that they are at least a little bit closer to providing such a device. Now, however, it seems any device capable of creating a method of input, like the iPad’s touch screen or perhaps a USB peripheral gaming controller (not mentioned, but to be expected) will be able to stream HD gaming content that looks just as great as the modern gaming generation as played on Xbox 360 – but seemingly limitless.

This type of technology truly brings to question the concept of the future of hand-held devices and battery power consumption standards. For me, personally, I look at this type of technology and see visions of the 90’s when Sega Channel was still pumping.

We’re terribly sorry for the recent downtime the site has incurred, but we’ve been hard at work to bring the site back up. We’ve had issues with a few things including hosting issues as well as a bit extra, which I’ve outlined in our forum, but we’re back now and we’re working hard towards being better than ever before. Keep your eyes peeled for a forum update within the next few days that will include a section for average members to post news for the website in. That news can be taken and posted up by a staff member, giving full credits to the user, of course, and will be a great way that the community can take part in making the site a better place.

Also, it’s HIGHLY advised to enter the Brewology Network through www.Brewology.com instead of using one of the mirrors like WiiBrew or PSPBrew because we’re going to be adding news posts that are specific to the Brewology page itself about the latest tech trends and what-not and the only way to see such information is to enter the site through www.Brewology.com. Doing this will also filter the news from every aspect of our site into one convenient page for you to view! So please, if you haven’t already, make sure to add the Brewology page to your bookmarks or homepage or just plain enter it in when accessing the site.

Thanks for everything folks. Again, sorry for the downtime, but welcome back to the Brew!

Apparently, you will only be able to use the new iPhone firmware on the 3G and 3G iPhones. It seems like Apple may be rolling out with a new iPod Touch, too, if hardware limitations is the cause for this.

It’s good because all of you guys not made of money shouldn’t be allowed to use things like video recoding on your 2G’s, or multitask on the 2G, or MMS on your 2G because it’s impossible because of hardware limitations.

Sure, you could go the easy route and pick up a MiFi, but if you’re serious about your on-the-road wireless broadband, you should probably buy an entire car. Ford’s next generation of Sync systems will have built-in WiFi and the capability of sharing a 3G connection with the car’s driver-defined white list of approved devices. It’s a bring-your-own-3G-card affair (you jack into the Sync’s USB plug), and sounds like a nice way for Ford to get you to pay for a 3G connection that could theoretically fuel some of those upcoming Sync apps. The second generation of Sync is due to launch next year, and we should be seeing plenty of it at CES in January: Ford’s CEO has the opening keynote.

Dell’s reorganizing the entire company to create a bonafide mobile division that will make work on phones and other portable thingers, headed up by Ron Garriques, formerly of Motorola. Incidentally, Dell’s consumer PC division is getting rolled into the small-business unit—which kinda smells weird to us, especially considering how Dell’s shrinking.

“Privacy advocates and career criminals alike are in a lather over reports that between September 2008 and October 2009, Sprint Nextel ponied up customer location data to various law enforcement agencies more than 8 million times. Speaking at ISS World 2009 (a conference for law enforcement and telecom industry-types responsible for “lawful interception, electronic investigations and network Intelligence gathering”), Sprint Nextel’s very own Paul Taylor, Manager of Electronic Surveillance, lamented on the sheer volume of requests the company’s received in the past year for precise GPS data for Sprint customers. How did the company meet such high demand? Apparently, his team built a special “web interface” which “has just really caught on fire with law enforcement.” We’re glad that Sprint’s plans to streamline the customer service experience don’t stop short of those who serve and protect, but as the EFF points out, plenty of nagging questions remain, including: How many individual customers have been affected? Is Sprint demanding search warrants? How secure is this web interface?”
