Critics of the ‘Irish Sopa’ legislation say it could curb growth in the online business in a country which has become a major global hub for companies such as Google. Illustration: Bloomberg/Getty Images

The Irish government has passed into law controversial copyright legislation that internet freedom groups have called a new form of censorship.

Seán Sherlock, the Labour minister for research and innovation, signed the legislation to amend copyright law in Ireland.

Opposition to the legislation – called by critics the “Irish Sopa” after the US Stop Online Piracy Act – has been robust. Ireland is a major global hub for companies such as Google and Facebook, which are among the biggest employers in Dublin, and some in the hi-tech industry believe the changes could curb the growth of online business in the Republic.

Sherlock said he “urged all interested parties to focus now on making Ireland a model of international best practice for innovation, and ensuring that our copyright laws facilitate the achievement of this goal”.

He denied that the legislation could lead to the blocking of major websites such as YouTube or Facebook – which could potentially be subject to injunctions if copyrighted material was posted on them by other parties – and stressed he had “no intention” of curbing the freedom of Irish internet users.

An online petition opposing the legislation has recorded more than 80,000 signatures since it was started at the end of January.

But the Irish Recorded Music Association has backed the amended copyright law, claiming it would protect Irish musicians and recording artists.

Nokia today ushered in a new era in high-end smartphone imaging with the Nokia 808 PureView.  This is the first smartphone to feature Nokia PureView imaging technologies, bringing together high resolution sensors, exclusive Carl Zeiss optics and Nokia developed algorithms, which will support new high-end imaging experiences for future Nokia products.

The Nokia 808 PureView features a large, high-resolution 41 megapixel sensor with high-performance Carl Zeiss optics and new pixel oversampling technology.  At standard resolutions (2/3, 5 and 8 megapixels) this means the ability to zoom without loss of clarity and capture seven pixels of information, condensing into one pixel for the sharpest images imaginable.  At high-resolution (38 megapixel maximum) it means the ability to capture an image, then zoom, reframe, crop and resize afterwards to expose previously unseen levels of details. With superior low-light performance and the ability to save in compact file sizes for sharing in email, MMS, and on social networks, the Nokia 808 PureView makes it possible for anyone to capture professional looking images in any conditions.

In addition to superior still imaging technology, the Nokia 808 PureView, also includes full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom and the world’s first use of Nokia Rich Recording.  Rich Recording enables audio recording at CD-like levels of quality, previously only possible with external microphones. The Nokia 808 PureView also features exclusive Dolby Headphone technology, transforming stereo content into a personal surround sound experience over any headphones and Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback.

“Nokia PureView imaging technology sets a new industry standard by whatever measure you use,” said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices.  ”People will inevitably focus on the 41 megapixel sensor, but the real quantum leap is how the pixels are used to deliver breath-taking image quality at any resolution and the freedom it provides to choose the story you want to tell.”

iPad 3 has more tapered edges than the iPad 2, but a little bit thicker

What is the latest and greatest with the iPad 3? We have all the rumors, and all the purported specs covered. We also have an exclusive in depth look at the back shell of the iPad 3, as we have a production piece from one of our most reliable sources. Want to know more? Read on ~ Oh, and there’s one more thing: the “iPad mini”.

UPDATE: iPad 3 front glass and power/volume buttons cable leaked.

Purported iPad 3 front glass spy shot

The image above shows the glass front of the iPad 3. It is the same 9.7-inch size and shape as the iPad 2. The placement of the home button, as well as holes for the front-facing camera and ambient-light sensors, are also in the same places as the iPad 2. However, if you look closer, the ribbon cable which runs along the side of the display is the only real point of difference. That cable is much longer than the one on iPad 2. And the cable you’re seeing below, is the power/volume buttons cable for iPad 3. Comparing to the power/mute/volume buttons cable of iPad 2, it looks different.

iPad 3 power/volume buttons cable

The Latest
It seems there has been a leak, a most incredible one, from a Chinese forum.

The photo above seems to be showing the production facilities for iPad 3 screens.

On the boxes you can see “Samsung” written on them, and the back of the screens have similar markings to the ones we have seen from Sharp and early test AU Optronic variants.

The photos were taken at Taiwan-based LCD backlight unit (BLU) maker Radiant Opto-Electronics’ plant in Wujiang city. The shots are blurry due to tight security measures in the plant. So, the photos do confirm Samsung being a screen supplier for the new iPad 3. These displays are Retina Displays, according to the poster. Also, the poster claims there are four iPad 3 devices at the plant as well.

Radiant Opto-Electronics has 4 factories, one in Taiwan, one in Nanjing, one in Guangzhou and the one you are looking at now in Wujiang. They specialize in TFT LCD screens of many sizes.

a video introducing Radiant Opto-Electronics

The factory in Wujiang has many clean rooms (a room pressurized with filtered air, no dust sources in the room), like the one you see in the photo below.

a clean room in Radiant Opto-Electronics’ plant

The factory is almost 130,000 square meters in size also, making it by far the biggest. It has roughly 5,000 employees working there, and is put in the Wujiang Economic Development Zone (WEDZ). This ensures low taxes, and higher profits for the Taiwanese company. Our source within the company indicated they will be working on Macbook Pro screens in March. This follows Apple’s supply chain diversification strategy.

Please note in our previous December story that we did accurately predict a Retina Display for the new iPad.

MacRumors confirmed iPad 3 has a 2048×1536 Retina display

However we do have some conflicting reports as well. According to the poster on the Chinese forum, there are no volume buttons on the iPad 3. Well, you can see from our iPad 3 rear shell (as shown in photo below) that there clearly is volume buttons. Our component is a confirmed rear shell for iPad 3 Wi-Fi + 3G model.

Moreover, if you compare the put together piece here, as well as here, you can clearly see volume buttons. Thus, this would give conflicting information. This being said, we have asked our sources, and they have assured us volume buttons will be on the device. The Chinese poster on the forum also indicated that the bezel on iPad 3 is narrower. We think it could be possible, as it would help prevent the previous “light leak issues”.

Not to be outdone, Chinese Weiphone forums have come up with some interesting news as well.

a prototype iPad 3 logic board showing an “A5X” system-on-a-chip

If you look at this, it seems to be the iPad 3 logic board in some form. The chip numbering would lead us to believe it is an earlier prototype, much like the previous “developer” iPhone 4S. As many of you readers are aware, Apple product development usually makes a small change on a current device, then moves to bigger changes as hardware programming is complete. We believe this photo of what is claimed to be the iPad 3’s logic board showing an “A5X” system-on-a-chip would most certainly be a piece of an earlier prototype.

iPad 3 Hardware Rumors

a side-by-side look at the iPad 2 and the iPad 3 rear shell

So rounding up everything we have seen and heard from our sources, this is what we believe the specs of the new Apple tablet will be:

It will have a 9.7 inch 2048×1536 Retina Display.

Possible quad core A6, but dual core for sure.
The processing power is required for the Retina Display.

A much improved camera, although maybe not be 8MP as production costs are high.

iPad 3 camera lens is noticeably larger than its predecessor

iPad 2 case fits the iPad 3 rear shell, and the iPad 3 camera lens is indeed larger than the iPad 2

The unit is about 1-1.5mm thicker depending on your model. Also it does fit inside some iPad 2 cases despite this.

iPad 3 is marginally thicker than the iPad 2

The edges are tapered, we have heard as said previously that the bezel is narrower, and we have confirmed there are volume keys.

iPad 3 rear shell has a more gradual taper to the edges than the iPad 2

LTE has been tested, but the market is limited, so perhaps we will not see anything outside of 3G connectivity.

(note: there is Verizon and AT&T models confirmed for the US as before. However people have said internal builds have been around for the past couple of months. We will cross our fingers.)
The capacity our sources have said will stay the same, at 16GB, 32GB and 64GB respectively.

Launch Date Details

We have heard from our sources that the launch date was going to be on Febuary 24th. This was to honor Steve Jobs with a product launch on this day. However, Chinese workers had at least one week’s holiday during the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday (started from January 22nd and ended on 28th), so manufacturing and supply line constraints have made that Feb 24 launch date impossible. Today, the launch date for iPad 3 is set for March 7. The Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco where Apple’s late founder Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad 2 last March is free on the day, which we feel is much more than a simple coincidence. Our inner sources have confirmed this.

One More Thing

According to one of our sources, a sub $400 device with 7-inch screen is in development. The device, excelling in iOS gaming and multimedia, will come with a tapered design seen in the iPad 3. It will be offered with a low voltage ARM processor, a powerful GPU, and a large battery. It will enter into developing nations like Brazil and China, and compete with the smaller tablets. It will have some sort of wireless keyboard that’s not efficient on power, so a low voltage ARM chip is being used. The device will get a Q4 release date, as Apple is preparing to release it in time for Christmas 2012.

Update 2012-02-20: Updated the PS3 FTP Client to version 1.1.
(Installer, find files, cancel transfer, bug fixes, etc.)

I have made a new toy… these are the features:

- It rips files (dummies, languages, update, etc) stored on the PS3 HDD/USB via FTP.
- New simulation mode (shows the results of a rip)
- If you have a folder with PS3 covers in your PC (eg. MCLUB jpgs), the cover is displayed when a remote folder that matches the titleid is selected (eg. BLES80608)
- Displays a column with the description of the game (based on the title id)
- It is a “full” ftp client based on wininet

Download: PS3 FTP Client 1.1 (WIP) 427 KB

It requires the VB5 Runtime DLL.

It is still experimental, some features are not complete, but at least the remote file ripper should work…

Final note: Use with care!! Remember that it touches the internal files in the HDD of your PS3.. The PS3RIP is safer.

true blue and cobra dongle

I (aka shadoxi) figured out where is located the payload of Trueblue and cobra dongle. You can find it at offset @360000 in lv2_kernel and 7f0000 in ps3 memory.

First of all you need to edit the header of lv2_kernel.self (from cfw trueblue) at offset 0×1D, replace 36 1A 00 by 4C FC F0. And decrypt it with unself tool from fail0verFlow. Open lv2_kernel.elf with Ida pro (in binary file mode), go to offset 360000 and press “C” to convert to asm code.

TrueBlue use some HVCALL:
lv1_insert_htab_entry
lv1_undocumented_function_114
lv1_undocumented_function_115
lv1_allocate_device_dma_region
lv1_map_device_dma_region
lv1_net_start_tx_dma
lv1_net_control
lv1_panic (shutdown ps3 when TB is unplugged)

This payload do some hvcall:
lv1_insert_htab_entry (map lv1)
lv1_allocate_device_dma_region (?)
lv1_map_device_dma_region (?)
lv1_net_start_tx_dma (?)
lv1_net_control (?)
lv1_panic (shutdown ps3 when TrueBlue Dongle is unplugged)
lv1_undocumented_function_114 (map lv1)
lv1_undocumented_function_115 (unmap lv1)

We need now to dump lv2 and lv1 memory when TrueBlue is plugged. So I create a modified TrueBlue Cfw with peek and poke syscall. It work fine !

PSVita Half byteloader

Today I updated my Vita to 1.60 and could confirm that HBL for the Vita still works as of firmware 1.60 (assuming the game itself hasn’t been patched). A few days ago, Teck4 had confirmed on Twitter that his exploit still works on the most recent firmware.

One thing I noticed is that the Vita, after being updated to 1.60, made me update the Content Manager Assistant on the PC as well (is it because my PC was connected to the internet? Maybe, although it i also possible that the OS on the Vita itself has a minimum version requirement for the PC client, and refuses to connect if that number is too low… something that can probably be bypassed at some point). It’s good to note though that Virtuous Flame’s OpenCMA still works fine and allows me to copy files while not being connected to the internet.

As far as the release is concerned, it will happen in a few days, for now all the info I can share is on this page. Stay tuned!
