Brewology News

In a slight change of lineup, HTC has now sued Apple for patent infringement. Their claim is that Apple is infringing on several patents that are in use on Apple’s i*ods, i*ads, i*hones, and their wide range of computers (did HTC patent glass?!?). Is this not becoming more and more ridiculous? HTC has not released information on which specific patents Apple is infringing, but we are sure the legal docs shall be released eventually.
What’s even better is that HTC is seeking to ban the sale of these products in the entire US. Excuse me but, “zOMG!” Someone in Washington needs to give all these companies a good spanking for all this craziness. Rest assured, if HTC has a case, this will make national news. Even more news worthy is if they win and Apple has to stop selling their products. Could you imagine that?

This is what happens when Karma Hits you. Lets Hope HTC Wins, Showing Apple that they cant bully their way back to the top.

For the first time, we have been involved in something truly spectacular

We were the first in the world to test the downgrade from 3.70 to 3:55 on a PS3 Slim (With flash memory, ” NOR “) using the ProgSkeet and patched some files provided by dospiedra, a famous Spanish coder already discovered on the crest of the wave for the method of going back to 3:55 / 3:41 with the PS3 (FAT flash memory “NAND”).

After several attempts, in collaboration with dospiedra, we got to go back from 3.70 to 3:55, enter the factory mode with a simple key to jailbreak, rifleshare a modified version of 3:55 to prevent the SYSCON (the registry in between downgrades) was consulted during the downgrade and now we are happily at 3:55 KMEAW!

With this version of moddata 3:55, you can perform a memory dump today and you can switch on the fly from 3:55 to 3.70 without having to make all this long procedure times: progskeet using it you can go straight to 3.70 changed to 3:55!

Dospiedra said it will release details on the patches applied to the NOR and the update file as soon as possible.

New life for those who arrived too late to enjoy the benefits of the 3:55?

Yep, you are reading that title correctly. Google is acquiring Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion in a move that was clearly made because of Moto’s massive patent portfolio. Both boards unanimously approved the decision – Google now looks to “supercharge” the Android operating system and enhance competition in the mobile space.
Notes from conference all:
Update 1: Most of the questions from media and investors on the call clearly has to do with patents and licensing – something Google or Motorola won’t give many details about, but you can tell that they are very pleased with this partnership. Moto’s some 17,000 patents greatly strengthens and helps protect Andr0id.

Update 2: And just so you know, both Larry Page and Andy Rubin have already said multiple times that Android remains open. Rubin spoke with the top 5 manufacturers yesterday and made it very clear to all of them that nothing has changed. Motorola will operate as its own company and Android will remain open to use as it has been. The idea here is that it gives Google a chance to “supercharge” the OS.

Update 3: You can view Larry Page’s comments on the acquisition here.

Update 4: Andy Rubin still expects the Nexus series to be a competition between manufacturers. Just because they own Motorola now, doesn’t mean that every new Nexus device will be from Moto. They will have to compete along with HTC, Samsung, LG, etc. to put together a phone that Google would be proud to brand as a Nexus.

Update 5: Call is over, Larry seems more-than-thrilled. As are we, Larry.

Google to Acquire Motorola Mobility

Combination will Supercharge Android, Enhance Competition, and Offer Wonderful User Experiences

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. & LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. – Aug. 15, 2011 – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: MMI) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Google will acquire Motorola Mobility for $40.00 per share in cash, or a total of about $12.5 billion, a premium of 63% to the closing price of Motorola Mobility shares on Friday, August 12, 2011. The transaction was unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies.
The acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a dedicated Android partner, will enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing. Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.
Larry Page, CEO of Google, said, “Motorola Mobility’s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers.”
Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola Mobility, said, “This transaction offers significant value for Motorola Mobility’s stockholders and provides compelling new opportunities for our employees, customers, and partners around the world. We have shared a productive partnership with Google to advance the Android platform, and now through this combination we will be able to do even more to innovate and deliver outstanding mobility solutions across our mobile devices and home businesses.”
Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google, said, “We expect that this combination will enable us to break new ground for the Android ecosystem. However, our vision for Android is unchanged and Google remains firmly committed to Android as an open platform and a vibrant open source community. We will continue to work with all of our valued Android partners to develop

Motorola may be looking for a spicy new global brand name for their next wave of phones, but we’re pretty sure now that it won’t be KORE. The name first caught our eye when it was used in a variety of domains that Moto had purchased, leading many to believe that it could be their next tablet (quad-core + kal-el = kore). We then speculated after listening to CEO Sanjay Jha that it could be the brand name that we’d see attached to their non-U.S. phones around the world – something to help recognize their line of phones, similarly to the way Samsung does with Galaxy.
Well, so much for that. The folks over at Fusible noticed a trademark filing this week that suggests it will be attached to a fitness line of products. As you can see below, there is no mention of a phone anywhere:

“ELECTRONIC NON MEDICAL PORTABLE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY MONITOR AND FITNESS DEVICE FOR MEASURING MOVEMENTS, INDIVIDUAL’S ENERGY EXPENDITURE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVEL AND ACCESSORIES THEREFORE, NAMELY, HEADPHONES; SOFTWARE FOR DEVELOPING AND MONITORING PERSONAL ACTIVITY AND EXERCISE PLANS, TRAINING PLANS, TRAINING GOALS AND GIVING FEEDBACK ON THE ACHIEVED RESULTS”

We’re thinking if anything, KORE will be the name of the new Moto watch we have seen a couple of times. A “fitness device for measuring movements” matches the device that is pictured above. Oh, well.

With the iPhone 5 strongly rumored to drop in either September or October, it seems as though Google has loaded up their cannons to return fire at Apple with their highly anticipated Android 4.0 update, dubbed “Ice Cream Sandwich.” First announced at Google I/O 2011, there is still a great deal of mystery surrounding the next version of Android, but thanks to reports from multiple sources, we have learned that it should be showing up on devices in October. We say devices, rather than phones, because Ice Cream Sandwich will not be a phone-exclusive platform; we’ll be seeing Ice Cream Sandwich on phones, tablets, computers… who knows where else.

Redmond Pie reported on a source who, according to them, has knowledge of Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich plans. The source statesthatthe first device, which may be either a smart phone or a tablet, will be released in October (earlier than planned) to compete with Apple’s next-generation iPhone which is strongly expected to release either in September or October.

Here are some of the features we DO know about Ice Cream Sandwich:

USB Hosting It is understood that Android 4.0 will bring about USB Hosting which will allow you to use practically any device with the tablet ranging from an Xbox controller for games to a keyboard/mouse for surfing and other things. You will also have the ability to integrate a USB device to work specifically with an app. So a heart monitor used with a fitness app, for example.

Tracks Your Face Android 4.0 wil have the ability to track your face so instead of you trying to move around to get into the camera, the camera will auto-focus on to you instead. It will also be handy in video conferencing because the camera will moveto you when you begin speaking and then move to whoever speaks so you don’t waste time trying to move your phone or tablet every time the you want to focus it on someone in particular.

PS3 Controller on Android

Not a whole lot to say here. Sixaxis has developed an app for your Android phone that can enable you to use a PS3 controller on your phone, and the process is relatively simple at that. It doesn’t even require soldering! The app isn’t compatible with all phones though, you can download the Sixaxis Compatibility Checker that will let you know whether or not you can use the $1.65 app. Your phone will also have to be rooted. There’s not much to the process though other than running the SixaxisPairTool on your pc to get things up and running.

Assassin's Creed Revelations

Ubisoft announced that a multiplayer beta would be released September 3rd, initially only available to PSN+ or non-paying Ubisoft Uplay users. Everyone else will have access on September 12th. It doesn’t seem like a beta has been announced yet though for the Xbox 360 or PC. I for one am not very concerned that it seems to be PS3 only so far considering it’s only a multiplayer beta, I am glad though that they are hopefully working out the kinks in the multiplayer aspect this time.

“The beta, Ubi’s announcement indicates, includes subsets of Revelations’s full multiplayer offering, providing, for now, just nine characters (The Sentinel, The Vanguard, The Guardian, The Vizier, The Thespian, The Deacon, The Bombardier, The Trickster and The Champion), three maps (Knight’s Hospital, Antioch, Constantinople) and four modes (Wanted, Manhunt, Deathmatch, and Artifact Assault).”

To be honest I’d be completely happy if they just removed the multiplayer aspect all together and devote that disc space to a longer singleplayer mode. Maybe it’s just me though, although if a multiplayer beta is any indication of the time they’re putting into Revelation’s multiplayer maybe they can win my heart back. Good idea, now just make it a good execution!
