iPhone Dev Team have updated their jailbreak tool, redsn0w. redsn0w version b5 incorporates a fix for iBooks, this time involving DRM. @planetbeing wrote a utility called “crazeles” that overcomes jailbreak detection by iBooks that would cause about 10% of images to show incorrectly. This fix is similar to the “hunnypot” fix that @comex wrote for the 4.x jailbreak. As usual, you can choose to install the fix either by re-running redsn0w over your existing jailbreak (de-select Cydia if you do that), or by installing the corona package from Cydia (it’s the same set of files no matter which way you choose).

Microsoft is set to unveil the Xbox 720 at CES 2012 in January, with developer versions of the next-gen console landing before Christmas. This is according to Edgemagazine – owned by the same publishers as TechRadar – which is reporting that it has a source close to the matter working at Ubisoft Montreal. Both Sony and Microsoft have denied that next-gen versions of their consoles are close to being released but Edge believes that Microsoft is hard at work prepping the Xbox 720 for a late 2012 release date and a surprise showing at CES 2012, which takes place in January. According to Edge, Ubisoft Montreal – which is not commenting on rumour or indeed speculation – is already working on PCs which have been kitted out with the Xbox 720’s specs. Although these specifications aren’t known, the GPU for the kit is apparently made by AMD. All about the next genIf 2012 is indeed the year for the Xbox 720, then it would mean that Microsoft isn’t going to let the Nintendo Wii U take much of the next-gen limelight when it is also released in 2012. Just last week it was leaked that the codename for the next-gen Xbox was Loop and this week Brian Prince, Senior Architect Evangelist for Microsoft, hinted that he was working on some “exciting cloud-based stuff” for the Xbox platform. While we assumed this was for the Xbox 360, could he have been talking about the Xbox 720? This isn’t the first time an Xbox 720 release date was rumoured. In October, itwas reported that the next-gen console would be launching at gaming expo E3 in 2013. This makes a lot of sense considering the Xbox 360 made its debut at E3 2005, but it is always nice to have a release date rumour in the week that marks 10 years since the arrival of the original Xbox. Edge is also hinting that Sony is working on a quicker release of thePlayStation 4. In its report it believes that “one major Sony-owned studio has now ceased PlayStation 3 development [with] its entire focus having shifted to the console’s successor.” CES is known for its big tech launches but we’re not sure if it is the place to show off the Xbox 720. Edge is a reputable source, however, so we are badging this as Quite Likely. Game on? Source : TechRadar |

Samsung is seeking an injunction to get the new iPhone 4S banned from sale in France and Italy. It claims that Apple has used 3G wireless technology, which Samsung invented, without paying for it. A patent war between the companies has been rumbling on for months in courts around the world. Apple has obtained temporary embargoes on its rivals’ products in Australia and Germany and is seeking similar rulings in several other countries. In a statement, Samsung said: “Apple has continued to flagrantly violate our intellectual property rights and free ride on our technology, and we will steadfastly protect our intellectual property.” Patent law blogger Florian Mueller warned that Samsung was putting the cart before the horse by seeking an injunction before negotiating terms. “Imagine what would happen if every participant in a standard-setting process could later shut down entire telecommunications networks even if the alleged infringers are willing to pay a royalty to be determined, in the event of a commercial disagreement between the parties, by a court of law,” wrote Mr Mueller on his Foss Patents site. Sales bans
Because the technology is essential to the functioning of modern phones, Samsung is obliged to license it to other manufacturers under Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) terms. Conversely, the patents being enforced by Apple against Samsung in Germany, the Netherlands and Australia relate to specific innovations which it is not obliged to license – primarily around its touchscreen user interface. It has also successfully argued before the courts that the look and feel of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab gave a “clear impression of similarity. As a consequence of the actions: The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is currently banned from sale in Germany. A ban on sales of Samsung smartphones is due to come into effect in the Netherlands in October. Samsung has postponed its tablet launch plans in Australia while its legal battle there is ongoing. Many observers believe that Samsung is walking a fine line between standing-up to Apple and avoiding jeopardising valuable contracts with its occasional foe. Samsung supplies parts for many of Apple’s devices, including screens for some of its smartphones and tablets. The two companies are said to have agreed a components deal in February worth $7.8bn (£5bn). Source : BBC News |
