The title says it all. iOS 4.3 conveniently allows iPad users to choose what their Side Switch does. Now, everyone can calm down.

Yes folks, the fabled Verizon iPhone, the one that many believed would be available only once some far away planets aligned and sacred offerings to Mr. Steve Jobs himself were made, has finally became a reality.

Not much has changed since the “original” iPhone 4 became available to AT&T wireless customers last June, but the two noteworthy additions/changes is the inclusion of the Wireless Hotspot feature coming preloaded (at an additional charge mind you..) on the device and a button or two being shifted to accommodate the new antenna design. Though not official, speculation has ensued that the Antenna Design has been modified breaking way for a better signal- mostly to avoid the debacle caused by the antenna problems in the first few days after the initial release. Besides these few things, the same A4 chip, Retina Display, 512MB of RAM is still included in the same iPhone package many have came to know and love.

Phone Pricing:
The iPhone 4 will be priced per usual at:
$199 for a 16GB version
$299 for a 32GB version

Many have probably gotten this far into the read and are thinking “Why would I choose this iPhone over the other”. Although each provider has more prominence throughout each parts of the country, their plans are now different. Verizon offers the unlimited 3G Data Pack at $30 extra a month, while AT&T offers a capped 2GB a month. Keep this in mind as you purchase any device in the upcoming months really.

*UPDATE* It seems there is no preloaded crapware…erg, “Verizon Apps”… on the the device according to a hands on review by the Engadget crew. Kiss VCast and VZ Navigator goodbye!

UPDATE #2 Current Verizon customers will be given the option to preorder and receive an iPhone 4 on February 3rd on a first come first serve basis.

The Motorola Xoom, a dual core tablet running Android 3.0 Honeycomb, won the title of “Best Gadget of CES”- judged by editors of Cnet. The Xoom also won the “Best Tablet of CES” award.

Motorola was not satisfied with this though, instead they produced the Android Powered Atrix 4G smartphone winning the “Best Smartphone of CES” award as well.

Motorola Mobility device head, Alain Mutricy, was quoted saying, “Our partnership with Google has been very intense and has enabled some great technology.”

Congrats to Moto and Android as a whole!

Yes, you read that correctly. All firmwares ever released or to be released by Sony will have homebrew. Why? Well, the company has no way of making their gaming machines know what is homebrew and what is officially released programs.

How is this possible? Well, the makers of both products have added a secret encryption to everything that is ran on either machine. Without this encryption, your programs will not run. But, that secret key has been released for both of the devices and this year, we will see both devices explode with homebrew and Sony won’t be able to do anything about it!

Thanks Geohot, Team fail0verflow, Mathiuel, and the others! :D We love you and truly appreciate everything you’ve done for us!

Last month, a group of devs calling themselves Project #PS3Bluray had announced that they were working on a solution for end users who had lost there blue ray playback functionality due to downgrading there PS3 to an older firmware version. Well, that time is now! Project #PS3BluRay have just released an easy to use PS3 blue ray application exclusively over at psgroove.com and is now ready to fix your PS3 blue ray problems.

BACKGROUND

Our quest to restore BD playback for those PS3s that lost it after downgrading continues. Unfortunately our project suffered a serious setback last week when one of our discoveries was prematurely leaked: A potentially harmful and incomplete method to restore BD playback was disclosed by an attention-seeking individual. It should be noted that the fix in question is only a “band-aid” solution to the problem. There is a very real possibility of future drive revocation resulting in PERMANENTLY broken playback! However, to make using it safer for those who wish to apply it, we have created this collection of DRL Tools. In the meantime we are continuing to work on a permanent and simple solution for all PS3s

The tools in the suite are:

- DRLbackup v0.90 (PS3 pkg used to backup DRL1 / DRL2 files to a USB drive)

- DRLgen v0.90 (Windows .net 2.0 application to derive DRL1 / DRL2 files from an MKB_RO.inf file)

- DRLcopy v0.90 (PS3 pkg to restore previously backed-up DRL1 / DRL2 files or to copy derived DRL1 / DRL2 files from DRLgen)

HOW IT WORKS

Each Blu-Ray movie contains a Media Key Block (MKB) as part of its copy protection scheme. Newer movies feature higher MKBs; the latest one is MKB v20. Addtionally, each BD movie has a unique encrypted title key. Both are stored inside the AACS/MKB_RO.inf file of each disc. Fixing BD playback requires exact knowledge of which was the first instance of the highest MKB played so far. DRLgen can be used to identify the Blu-Ray movie with the highest MKB, and then create replacement DRL1/2 files for your PS3 which then restore BD playback.

REQUIREMENTS

1. A means to access Blu-Ray title discs to gather the AACS/MKB_RO.inf file, a Blu-Ray drive in a Mac / Windows PC makes the process easiest. Alternatively, SAK v1.0 can be installed as an OtherOS on the PS3 with firmware 3.15 or lower to accomplish this task.

2. Explicit knowledge of EVERY blu-ray title the blu-ray drive has played and the MKB versions of those discs. WARNING: While you can safely check every BD’s MKB with DRLgen, you should limit the number of attempts of installing DRLs on the PS3, as the full details of the AACS “traitor tracking system” are not well known.

3. A FAT32 USB storage device to store and retrieve MKB_RO.inf and DRL files.

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS

Full instructions are available on the Project #PS3bluray wiki DRLtools – Project #PS3bluray

ABOUT THE TOOLS

DRLgen is a new and SAFER utility that uses the MKB_RO.inf from a Blu-Ray disc to derive correctly formatted DRL1 and DRL2 files easily every time. No difficult hex editing or byte-counting is involved. It is important to note that DRLgen uses the AACS’ specification for the MKB format and does not simply assume DRL records start at a specific position and are of a specific length. The previously leaked information makes all these assumptions and is flat out INCORRECT in many situations today, and is NOT future proof and could lead to permanently broken playback.

DRLbackup, previously released, has been updated to work in cooperation with the other two tools. As a best practice, a backup of the DRL1 / DRL2 files should be made prior to any system downgrade. Use in conjunction with DRLcopy for a completely recreatable process to downgrade your Large NAND PS3 and restore Blu-Ray playback in the future.
Note: The location of saved files has changed, users of the older version of the tool should place their saved DRL files into a ‘PS3bluray’ folder in the root of the USB storage device for compatability with the new DRLcopy tool.

DRLcopy is a new PS3 tool that uses the output of the new version of DRLbackup (or properly located DRL backups from the previous version) and/or the derived DRL files from DRLgen to restore your blu-ray functionality after a firmware downgrade.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP:

We are still in need of a MKB v13 DRL1. If the highest movie you have played on your (non downgraded) PS3 is MKB v13, please create a backup of your DRL1 with DRLbackup v0.90 and email it to [email protected]
Thank you!

ABOUT THIS PROJECT:

Project #PS3bluray was formed on efnet by a group of enthusiasts after the Blu-Ray playback problem was discovered, our goal is to find a permanent solution. This is a group effort; we are neither seeking individual fame nor money. For serious discussion, join us in our IRC-channel #PS3bluray on efnet.

Thanks to everyone involved! Your time and hard work is very much appreciated.

Heden from Team DeLiGhT has just sent our neighbors over at psgroove.com a very nice new years demo for the PS3. It Displays a new years greeting as well as some pretty cool animated graphics.

(Video below)

PSGroove.com – Happy New Year 2011! Intro from DeLiGhT

Well, another year is almost behind us. Mistakes have been made and hearts have been broken; but we have learnt. We Learn from our mistakes so that we may never do them again. Although we know deep in our hearts; we sometimes still might. Humanity has never been about being that “perfect” someone. It has always been about gathering knowledge and life experience. Learning from our triumphs; as well as our failures. As we march towards a new year, I invite you all to take a moment to think about what you have accomplished this year, and what you would like to accomplish in the year to come. May you receive everything you have ever dreamt of having, and much more. With that, I wish you all a sincere and very Happy new year.

From my family to yours – PuppetMaster

Ohhhhh DANG this thang is looking sexy!

Modeled after the Gallery 3D app (hopefully following suite with the GPU acceleration), Google will be giving us Android users a new Music player that will directly rival the competition. In fact, the way it handles the music files, it seems it will outperform even the coveted “Cover Flow”.

The video appears to possibly signify even further advances in the Android OS as a whole. It appears that by clicking the icon in the status bar you are returned to the Apps main menu. Possibly even leading to buttonless Android Phones!
